I realized that I have too much time on my hands when I was cleaning my fish and decided to weigh the roe.

The first specimen was about 28 inches, I didn't weigh it but I'll figure it was about 8lbs.  The second fish was 25lbs.  First I put a plate on the scale and zeroed it out.  Then I weighed the roe from the small ling at 9oz.  Then I weighed the larger roe at 2.25lb or 36oz.  Then I examined the roe itself and found no discernible size difference between the two.

I don't know how useful this info is but use it how you will.

I told you I had too much time on my hands!  lol

No I just eyeballed it.  I would have to use a grain scale for that kind of measurement.  I was just curious because I had heard that bigger striper have bigger eggs.  If anything, the smaller roe was more vibrant and smelled better and just looked "healthier".  I was just curious if the amount of roe was vastly different based on size.

According to http://www.nwrc.usgs.gov/wdb/pub/species_profiles/82_11-119.pdf

Quote
Lingcod eggs are about 2.8 mm in diameter
when first extruded but swell to about 3.5 mm
shortly after contact with water (Forrester
1%9). A female 76 cm long and weighing
4.5 kg had about 60,000 eggs, and another that
was 92 cm long and weighed 11.1 kg produced
about 518,000 eggs (Wilby 1937). Hart (1967)
reported that a 100-cm female carried about
290,000 eggs. A

That's quite a variation between the 92 cm female carrying 518,000 eggs and the 100 cm female carrying 290,000 eggs.

As with most fishes, fecundity increases with size of fish. In the northern end of the lingcod range, females can produce 50,000 eggs at a length of 24 inches, 124,000 eggs at a length of 32 inches, and 170,000 eggs
at a length of 36 inches.

Thanks, Yeah standard research suggests that older fishes produce substantially more eggs. I was just curious for curiosity sake  :)  I have a scale that measures in 0.1 grams, so I tend to get all geeked out from time to time   :smt003  I wish however I have a scale that measures in 0.01 grams...  geek shining through...

That looks about right without getting into too much math.
