I always liked saying "gonadosomatic index" and I've weighed my share of fish 'nads. Often true that the older a female fish gets, the larger the proportion of her body weight she dedicates to eggs. This sometimes figures into minimum size regulations, i.e. a single 3rd season fish of some species might produce as many eggs as 3 or 4 first-time breeders without being much bigger.

By the way, don't eat lingcod or cab roe. Rockfish is ok.

I had read that about ling roe a few places in the past, but I just looked it up and it seems like it may not be true - cab roe is out, though.
