I don't think anyone in NCKA really cares about how many people attend our events, except for PolePole.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 I think we do care about hanging out with new and old friends and having a good time. It's really more social than competitive for the majority of participants. As Dustin mentioned, we actually get together because we like each other, unlike other groups.

This begs the next question that many clubs have discussed often - Tournament vs Jamboree?

Several clubs give small prizes for winning fish and raffle larger prizes to raise money for the charities they support.

Jamboree is more likely to attract newbies, inexperienced kayakers and families, which is important also, especially when goal is to build the sport, share knowledge, teach safety and help out your favorite charities.

Being an Eagle Scout, I know all about Jamborees, bad food, mosquitos, hot, dusty.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 Actually Jaborees have structured education and skills development as well as team competition. We could add an introduction to saltwater workshop to the Berryessa Salmon Slam if there are enough newbs who are interested and Ricci approves. The water should be warm enough to do some self rescue practice.

The fact that we beat SoCal for turnout is a testament to the strength of our community

You nailed it right there. They don't have the fabric that holds us all together. NCKA.

Not to bash the Steve Moyer, cause it was a hell of an event for a great cause, and I had an awesome time...but there was pretty much no sense of community before, during, or after the tourney.

Agreed,  That's what I noticed when I was there 8 years ago?  wow, time flys… anyway,  guys splintered and talking shit about each other and not in a nice way.  Kind of reminded me of the movie " The Warriors " with all these splinter groups….

  I did like hanging out with " The Salt Water Bastards…"  Very Kool Logo…   " Who's Your Daddy!!!??? "    :smt005 :smt044

Maybe PolePole could be the New "Cirus" and bring everyone together….

We're working on something for the BSS weekend.  Need to finalize a few details before it's 100% a go, but hopefully this will happen right after the holidays.  It will involve seminars/workshops as well as demos ... think of it as a kayak fishing festival.  Stay tuned.   :smt002

I like the idea. We did that many years ago combining paddlefest with a shark derby I believe. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=5714.0 The challenge with Berryessa is the PB traffic. I can help out if needed.

Thanks for the offer of help Scott.  I need to get final confirmation from Pleasure Cove that we can do this there, then all systems go.  We've already had verbal commitments from the major kayak manufacturers to do something like this this Spring.  Berryessa seemed like a good place for a variety of reasons.  It's relatively protected water.  And we're already having an event there.  We went up and scouted a few weeks back and believe the "beach" behind the campground is a good spot.  I don't expect a ton of boat traffic there as it is "upstream" of the marina.  That being said, does anyone have any first hand knowledge of this area in the spring?

Yes, NCKA was invited to have a derby at that Bay Area Paddlefest many years ago.  Then they moved it to Quarry lakes and the kayak fishing focus sort of fizzled for them.  We didn't have much say in the actual festival part and it was targeted at the recreational paddler in general.

With the demise of the Bay Area Paddlefest, this may be the only event in which we'd have the opportunity to test drive various products all in one place.  And we'll be able to focus it on kayak fishing. We'd have the bonus of having some of the areas best give seminars.  I'm pretty excited about the prospects of this.

Anyways, once we get confirmation that all is a go, I'll start a new thread and solicit feedback, volunteers, and presenters.

Funny you should mention Boy Scouts, same place CBKA tournament is held is where a Boy Scout jamboree is held, cabins, three large fields for tenting, swimming pool, bathrooms with showers, launch on the Chesapeake Bay, meeting hall that holds 175 people.

Any places like that around NorCal? Three Day Tournament, demos, sponsors, self rescue training in the swimming pool and support charity or members who need help. I am all in for that.

Size only really matters to those with big egos, small penises, and corporate ambitions. Real people know it is about the brotherhood, the food, the location and giving back. This is NCKA so please check your ego at the door.
