Curious to know what kayak fishing tournament is largest on west coast. Lived on east coast until 18 months ago, fished Jamaica Bay in NY, just south of JFK runways,  three days, around 325 participants.

Used to be the Steve Moyer, now it is Gimmie Shelter or Albion with 150-200 participants. They haven't run the Moyer since 2010.

Its not about the biggest. Or the most people. Its about who it helps. We had 162 anglers at The Albion Open this year. The event was able to give Joel and Marv $4500.00 to split. Another amazing thing about NCKA. In case you are wondering who Joel and Marv are, they are two of us who have struggled with cancer and were unable to work. One is gone and one is now cancer free. We never know how the dice will roll. We do know how to act though.

Biggest kayak tournament overall used to be the JaxKayakFishing Classic held in Jacksonville Florida.  They pull between 400-420 anglers each year.  Not sure if another one took largest honors in the past year or so.

Well said Craig!

To clarify, is the NY tourney three days of fishing? I've been thinking a tourney with a two or three day total. Would be a great testament to to a fisherman's skill

In the game of biggest fish, if you can't enjoy routinely gettin' your ass handed to you, by great fishermen, then you don't belong in the NCKA.

The Ride The Bull kayak fishing tournament in Louisiana claimed the largest kayak fishing tournament this year with like 488 participants (out of 523 registered).

GS7 was the largest on the west coast. Not sure what it is about the west coast but we can't seem to come close to the number of participants as the south and east coast. The multiple day events look like a blast.

We dont offer large cash prizes like they do in the South & East. I POSTED SOME IDEAS for some larger tournaments. It would be Kool to do a multiday. In the east & south there are also more densely populated cities in close proximity. If u live in the central south u can basically be anywhere in 9hrs, from Texas to Florida to NC...

Good point Jude! That's what makes nor cal more special. It takes real effort to come together. A multiple day event would be pretty cool. Off topic.  Sorry.

Who cares?
Quality, not quantity.
Purpose, not numbers.

It is surprising that SoCal doesn't have bigger events. Maybe it's an accessibility versus population density thing. Limited parking etc for water access. Up here we deal with some narly conditions. Takes a certain breed.  If we also had lots of flat, warm water, I'm sure our turnouts would be bigger. The fact that we beat SoCal for turnout is a testament to the strength of our community

Exactly, they have bigger numbers down south because it takes nothing to launch in ankle slappers and fish in board shorts and a tank top while riding 1-2' swell. Up here ya gotta really want it. You have to drive far and fish in less than ideal conditions. That's probably why they have the numbers. Now that being said, fishing La Jolla is pretty awesome. However,  I'd take Shelter Cove over anywhere else any day of the week.

East coast 6' swell is un managable and huge

West coast 6' swell is a nice day to get some rock fish

You nailed it right there. They don't have the fabric that holds us all together. NCKA.

Not to bash the Steve Moyer, cause it was a hell of an event for a great cause, and I had an awesome time...but there was pretty much no sense of community before, during, or after the tourney.
