I have a hard drive from a PC that died that contains a bunch of data that I need to move to a new PC. The power supply went bad on the PC but I'm sure the files are in good shape on the drive.  I have removed the drive. It's basically all of the document, photo and music files.  I have 1TB Seagate USB drive that I would like to get these files moved to so I can move them to the drive on the new computer I'll be receiving in a few days.  Is there a service I can use for this?  Does anybody know of someone reliable and reasonable?
Help!

Martin

You can easily do it yourself for a low low price of $13 for one of these things.

http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-CB-ISATAU2-Supports-2-5-Inch-5-25-Inch/dp/B000J01I1G

You plug it to your bare hard drive whether its IDE or SATA connection, and then connect via USB to your PC.  You can transfer files directly to your new PC when it arrives instead of having to transfer it to your 1TB Seagate first.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Internal 3.5" drive? If so, I have an external case that I can swap out an old drive that I use for an emergency traveler and retrieve your data for you. Or, you're more than welcome to borrow it and proceed at your leisure.

I bought a little case from Best buy that my laptop hard drive fit into & then it just uses a USB cable.  Worked fine & I too treat it like a "portable drive".  I like the $13 option better though!

Actually...thinking about it, I think the case method is better...haha.  It allows him to make further use of the hard drive by getting a case, instead of just getting data off of it and let it collect dust.   :smt003

Martin, I can do it for you for nothing.   :smt001  Bring it over and I'll transfer your files.

If your new PC is a desktop, you can just plug in the old drive as the second drive in your new PC, and copy the files over.

Thanks guys.  I just ordered a hard drive case form Amazon from about $20.00.  If I have any difficulties, I'll take you up on the offer Rey.  Thanks again for all of the responses.  It's great to have NCKA resources for other than fishing!

Martin I can do it for you.  You can look at it this way, it is an excuse to come up and visit the Sierra Nevada brewery.   :smt003

if it is for a laptop then yous you will need an enclosure.. if it is for a desktop you can just pop the drive inside one of your spare bays. there should be spare cables for the sata and power. if not pull it off your cd rom drive. if your close to fremont i can help you out.. i should have a spare external somewhere in my heaps of junk.

Ok guys, One more question:  Once I transfer the files to the new drive, can I format the old drive and remove the OS so it's just a blank slate? I would like to use the old drive (with the USB case) as a backup drive, if possible.

Didn't have to format mine or anything.  Just left all the OS on there.  Granted, the OS & such take up space on the drive, but it still works with my new OS & such.

You might want to leave the OS on there, as an emergency OS, if the new hard drive with the OS takes a crap.

This will cound funny but I have found, in at least one instance so far, that my older drives with older OS was a much needed commodity.  A machinist friend needed an older OS to operate one of his CNC machines & I dug thru my old drives & found one ready to roll.  Priceless!
