Ok guys, One more question:  Once I transfer the files to the new drive, can I format the old drive and remove the OS so it's just a blank slate? I would like to use the old drive (with the USB case) as a backup drive, if possible.

Yes.

If I were you, I would just plug in the old drive into your new computer, keeping your personal files on the old drive, and just delete the OS folder from it to free more space. Continue using the old drive to store your personal files.

The main reason for this is should you ever have to wipe your new drive to reinstall your OS, your data would remain untouched on the old drive.

Received a hard drive case from Amazon today.  $20.00 well spent!  I was able to access all of the files via USB port.  I'm not sure exactly which of the posted solutions I will utilize but it was great to be able to see all of my files.  Thanks again for all of the posts and suggestions.  The trip to Chico to visit Sierra Nevada was tempting.  Bret, I Plan take you up on the offer sometime soon.  Maybe a Loose Screws lunch meeting?  What could be better than great beer with great friends?
