All of those Elk pics made me want some rockfish action. Anyone interested in Monterey or Stillwater on 8/19? I have never fished Stillwater but the reports sound good.  :smt002

Stillwater may not be a good choice this weekend because of the Concours D'Elegance, Classic Car show/race etc.  Pebble will be very crowded this weekend.  I am also looking forward to some fishing this weekend.  I'll keep en eye on this post to see if an alternative developes.  Any locaiton near Monterey will work for me.

Where are ya'll launching from?  I think I am going to be bringing a newbie with me.  I would like to fish up close to pinos, so maybe launch from lover's point, but fishing in a group is fun, so whatever the consensus is will be fine.

I have to concur with sackyak on this one.  I would avoid pebble beach this upcoming weekend.  concourse means heightened security and alot more people there.

I have only launched from MBK and will probably have my son in my tandem kayak so surf launches would be more challenging. I don't know where Alex was thinking about going for sand dabs.

lover's point is as easy or more easy than mbk...just gotta take your kayak down a few stairs...won't be a problem with a small group to help out.  like i said though...I don't really care where we launch.

I think I'll be launching from MBK just because it's convenient for parking. This weekend  is going to be pack busy with all the tourist coming in for the Concourse. I like Lovers Point but not this week end.

My plan is to launch from MBK and paddle out to the bell buoy and fish for sanddabs then work my way to the yellow can for rockcod and hit the shoreline for halibut on the way back to MBK. So, that's the rout i like to take, providing Ocean conditions are ideal. If not then I'll consider Lovers Point or Otter cove always a good back up plan!

Do you think its safe to fish from a sit inside kayak (Keowee III) out of Lovers Point?

Regarding the Concourse. Dave and I last year went to Stillwater at Pebble Beach unaware of what the Concourse was all about. The first gate they wouldnt let us in. The next gate they wouldnt let us in. The next gate we found the guard said "Today is your lucky day, you can get in for free!" We thought that was very cool. Of course by now we were totally lost and it took us about an hour to weave our way back towards the launch point at Stillwater, it was like an obstacle course. As we got the final turn a highway patrol car had the driveway blocked off. He made me stop and asked me what I was doing. I said I was going fishing!  :smt003 He said "No your not" :smt011. So we got kicked out. :smt010  After all of that. I imagine we were probably sticking out like a sore thumb, a bright yellow truck with a bright yellow bananna on top surrounded by Rolls Royces and Ferraris  :smt005.  Anyway, there was a cool launch point that we found just outside of Pebble Beach, only thing was we had to carry our yaks down some pretty steep stairs. Dont know if I could wrestle my Marauder up and down those, I had my kelvar boat at the time. Lesson learned- dont even think about Stillwater this weekend.  :smt009

sure its safe as long as the kayak floats and you use good judgment like having a life jacket on and not stowed away in your hull. I have friends that fish out of otter brand kayaks. they tell me that could get a little tipsy at times.

they tell me they could only go short distance like in the kelp beds but not one of them would take a chance to paddle way out in open waters. :alien:
