I am looking to get a line counter reel mostly for trolling for Stripers or for dropping down to a target depth for Stripers. I may someday use it in the ocean but not often if I do. I do expect to fish the Delta and San Pablo Bay/Napa River. I see the three model lines. Accudepth, Sealine and Saltist. Cost is a factor in what I buy, but I also don't want to buy cheap that ends up being wasted money. Which model line would be a good fit for Stripers? Also which size reel in that line would fit best? Thanks ken

I have a sealine non counter and it's been a great reel. I assume the rest of the reel will be the same. I do use and love Shimano Tekota line counter reels. Very accurate and smooth. Only complaint is when the reel gets wet the line counter lens will fog up and make it very difficult to read.

I have a sealine counter but the model with two handels.  The line counter gave up on me after 6 years of use.  Which model you end up getting make sure you get the one with a single/power handle.

I have owned both the Tekota and Saltist LW LC and they are both great reels. I currently use a Saltist LW LC as my salmon trolling reel. It has held up well in heavy saltwater use for 2 years. Even though I don't like Shimano reels in general, I would give the Tekota the edge over the Saltist. The Saltist has some issues with the anti-reverse bearing at high drag settings and flimsy component in the dog mechanism. A lot of the hard core NCKA salt guys use Tekotas and have heard very few issues and these guys aren't the service every month types.  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

That's better than the cabelas model I read about. The line counter broke after 3 uses.

From what I can see the Tekota 500LC is a line counter with level wind. Is the line counter direct drive like the Daiwa?

Diawa Sealine = dependable , inexpensive, line counter

The Accudepth is a good value, but not made to last more than ~5yrs. The Sealine is a dependable reel and not-too-expensive (comparatively).
Have you considered the Abu Garcia linecounters? Like a size 6500 LC would be perfect for stripers in the Bay. They are built to last and cost around $100.
Don't get the Cabelas's linecounter...it's just a rebranded Shakespeare Tidemaster.
Okuma makes a few linecounters in this price range too. I abused the heck out of an old Convector for 4 seasons in the salt and it still works. But Okuma has some fancy-looking new linecounters available now.

I use a older Daiwa counter SG47LCA and it is great  Over 5 yrs old and never a problem
Reciently purchased a new SeaLine SG17LC3B and it quit working after one use. Sent in on warrenty and fixed free. Now it only reads half of known depth. I read somewere that the line being used will throw of the counter?? Appears it likes heavy thicker line. I use Power pro and that may be problem? Doesent effect my older model.
Looking at the Shimano Tekota for next reel.
Cheap way out is a clip on line counter from Berkley fishing.com # BALC. My buddy uses and likes it????
I feel quality of Daiwa is down and cant recomend.

Here's an alternative:

Cant beat the price for $30 each.

Its very similar to the Daiwa reels. I've caught a lot of stripers and trout on these. I use the DM20 or DM30 for stripers and DM15 for trout. I've had them for over 5 yrs now with no issues.

Never thought I would own a line counter reel but fishing on the Delta made it happen.  I have the Daiwa 17 LC and had problems with it in freespool.  Line wouldn't feed out easily.  FW corrected the problem- it was the level wind screwing up.  I don't like the drag on this reel, it is not smooth.  However I have landed several salmon with it.  I also have an Okuma Stratomaster combo that I picked up at Bass Pro for $80.00.  I prefer it over the Daiwa for the smooth drag, but the line counter must be pulled up manually to get it to zero.
Next time I need a line counter I will get the Abu 6500LC.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up getting the Shimano Tekota 500LC. I just liked the look and feel of it more. Also I know I am getting a good reel.

Played around with a Okuma, Diawa, and I think Shimano left handed line counter reels yesterday at Coyote Bait and Tackle.  I must say that Diawa is a pretty darn nice feeling reel.  I'd have to say it reminds me a lot of my old Abu Revo Toro that went overboard a few years ago.  VERY smooth, nice power handle, low profile, and the line counter looked like it works great.  Only problem was the price at $160 bucks (125 on amazon though) I couldn't justify purchasing it (yet).  Think it's this model if anyone wants to check one out: CW354DLX

I have three Tekotas and love them.  Two 500 and one 600.  I hose them down after use, and send them into Shimano annually for a cleaning/servicing and they come back like new.  Great reel.

Wait, did you mean to say Okuma? When I search that model number, it shows the lo-pro Okuma cold water linecounter, like this..and I've been curious about that reel because never seen it in person.
