Just had an idea for a different type of fishing gathering. Ever fished Eagle Lake? It is supposed to be pretty awesome in the fall. My property if 15 miles north of Eagle Lake. If people are interested, we could put together a camping/fishing trip. I have 7,000 acres so there is plenty of space to camp. No electricity besides a generator but we have an outhouse and hot running water for the shower. The rest of the camp (kitchen/dining cabin, bunk houses) are coming along slowly.

Labor Day is just around the corner.

Just a thought. Let me know if anybody is interested.

Bigdog,
Fished there as a kid and I'm 54 now :smt007. If I remember correctly their is a point which can be seen from the marina that most boaters go too. Huge fish which are now being crossbred for stocking. I believe that we here in this area have benefitted from this program with plants to Lake Chabot etc. (EBRP) which I have hooked into just recently in both Chabot and Del Valle.
Still a big fan of lower Hat Creek having fly fished there just last summer. I'll talk to the Boss and see what's up for that weekend.

Thanks Frankfishing

Frankfishing. Yes, they are using the Eagle Lake trout all over the state now. Interesting how those fish can live in just about any other water but they are the only ones that can live in Eagle Lake. For about 15 years, I have been driving along its shoreline to get to the property. Have yet to wet a line in it. I know lots of people who do. There are some big ones caught there each year.

BigDog - Sounds great!

I’ve fished there a couple of times but never in a kayak. We’ve always rented cabins at the lake. The last time we were there it snowed on us.

I’m in if that’s OK!

We should be OK as far as snow is concerned.

I have wanted to fish Eagle Lake for some time now. If any thing is co-ordinated/scheduled,  I will definitely try to be there. My wife is stuck working weekends during the grape harvest, so I am extra free.

Maybe 20 yrs ago with my kids camping, very pretty lake, had my original Windsurfer in the tules near the campsite all week, good winds for it every afternoon, all the boats off the water before noon, everyone else was getting up at 4:30, so when we figured out why - they all came back with big trout which they smoked as they had their siestas- we rented a boat and hooked one ourselves, but couldn't get it in the boat.  I've wanted to go back since, but never did.  Depending on the day, I might be interested in a very long trip.  I seem to recall we trolled a nightcrawler.  Pretty place to camp.

I've fished Eagle Lake a few years in a row during thanksgiving week... from a boat.  Cold as heck in the morning and you never know what the weather is going to do... snow, blow, rain, sun... anything from t-shirt weather to parka weather.

Fishing is great in the shallows that time of year.  Slow trolling with lead core line and about a 100-ft of 6# mono leader trolling J-fair trolling flies.  Olive and Cinnamon seemed to be the best colors.   Fish swirling in the mornings and about as fiesty as they get.  Beautiful lake to fish.

Here's a pic of a couple of the fish.

Dog, Just checked out the website. Kudos to you. I live East of Chico on HWY 32 so it's only about 2 hrs from home. I have never been to E.L. but dying to try. I am a bow hunter also, so the website got me drooling. Ever think about getting DF&G to plant Turkys on the place. Let me know when we can go. I can bring almost any tools you need for projects.

Hey big dog:

I took the kids up there mid-June.

Unfortunately, it was that 1st 100+ degree week and the fish skeedaddled from the shallows after the algae bloom.  They were on the move and had not settled into the deep spots yet.  No joy from the yak for me.

We met my friend Roger Keeling who guides on that lake and managed a few NICE fish with him on his boat.  Lead core line with mono leader trolling 1/3 nightcrawler, and also trolling needlefish lure.  Best bite was near the shrimp islands that day.

Roger is THE MAN for Eagle, Almanor, Antelope, and Butt lakes.  Nobody was catching fish but he put us on them.

I can't wait to get back there.....fishing lake only, no skiers or any of that nonsense.  the Land surrounding is beautiful and the fish are big and fiesty.

Looking at Eric's post, I'm thinking I might get back for a weekend in October or November for some cold water yakking.
I'd love to visit there and actually be able to USE my down bag!  It was so hot when we were there, kind of sapped your strength and stoke.  here's shots of Ema and Max with their (small) Eagle Lake trout.

Thanks for the offer of camp spot, BTW, what a generous resource you are.

Maybe we can fish Eagle Lake together soon.

Nice fish pics. That makes me want to get out there even more.

EK, yes, there weather can be unpredictable at the beginning and the end of the year. I had a work weekend planned over the Memorial Day weekend this year. Friday night, it started snowing. I thought, no big deal, I have been had flurries before. Woke up Saturday to 3 inches of snow. I had to call everybody and turn them around. Fortunately, it is pretty predictable until November. The worst we see is mountain thunderstorms in the afternoons.

rrnelums, (and anybody else interested) send me an email and I will add your address to my list of project volunteers. As for planting turkeys, lawsuits have put an end to any planting by DFG and WTF. But, about a month ago, my forester spot a flock of five turkeys just south of our fenceline. So, with all of the grasses and forbes that I am planting, they should move onto the property shortly.

I am at the property two or three weekends a month. Next weekend, will probably be a hectic one. On Sat. I am buying and picking up a back hoe loader and then transporting it up to the property. So, I probably won't spend much time actually on the property.
I will be there the 26th and 27th working on things and getting ready for the Labor Day weekend. I have posted an open invitation for that weekend for anybody to come up and camp and whatever. I will be there Sept. 1 through the 4th. I plan on taking my kayak up.

I'm heading up with the family for Labor Day weekend, and will have the yaks along for sure.  A friend of mine was up their for a weekned recently, and they hammered the trout fishing a crawler on a slip bobber, 30' down in 50-60' water.  It's an early to rise lake, as the bite shuts off at about 7:30 (but with a 2 fish limit, I hope to be done by then anyway!).  If anyone wishes to hook up, let me know.

Tight Lines,
Ben

I fished it from a float tube with a fly rod two years ago in late October. Water temp high 40s and the fish were sluggish. It took awhile for me to get used to crawling a rust-colored Wolly Bugger--it was hard for me to get used to slowing it to a crawl. Eventually hooked 4 and landed one (22 inches and fat)--it was barbless catch and release. I remember howling winds, white snow, and white caps as well--and fresh snow on the drive out over the pass.
