Anybody know anything about computer "branding?" I have an hp laptop (6910p) that had the motherboard replaced and is missing the computer identifier and serial number on the motherboard, I can see its missing the info in the BIOS cmd window. I can't seem to find any authorized hp service dealer who know how to do it. I am at best buy now and the seem to be baffled as well.

Question: Are those completely seperate and unique aside from the computers MAC address that you can find in the command prompt?

Why do you even care about the identifying number and motherboard serial number?

The MAC address only relates to the network interface, so that's irrelevant. Download the free BelARC Advisor, it can probe the hardware and tell you.

I am doing a corporate install (reimage form XP to Win 7). as part of the corp install I think the drive needs to check that the computer S/N is a recognized corporate computer and not my wife's computer I am trying to upgrade. So the install won't go without checking the brand identifier and S/N on the MB

I can see its missing the info in the BIOS cmd window.

Are you seeing the serial number in the BIOS screen during POST or are you can seeing the serial number when you type "wmic bios get serialnumber /format:wmiclivalueformat"?

normally the os provided by work is going to be a basic os. what it does is it sill go out and look for a kms server to license the os. this is normally within your wifes work domain. this in turn tells them how many systems are currently licensed. some systems look for the key every couple of days/weeks/months depending on how the admin sets it up. does it give you a specific error when installing. or does it not recognize the dvd?

I didn't actually try to install Win 7 yet, my techs adamantly say it won't work, but I will still try it when the drive is done being used by another user. I also thought of doing a blind install from the command prompt, boot from disk option, a sort of if I got the blue screen of death, but they said that would not work either. I am looking for a DMI tool now that I might try to get that missing info into the system info. Can't do it under the security tab in F10 setup

So you do NOT see the serial number in the BIOS?

That's correct, its not in the BIOS, or even in the system information
