Thanks guys, do you think it is much more dangerous than being out in the surf? Also, any recommendations on less sharky yet close to SF spots?

Do you mean more dangerous than sitting on a surfboard? hard to say really, but my opinion is yes. My reasoning is that as kayak anglers we put ourselves right over the structure that fish like, and that structure affords sharks the ambush cover they like. From my experience, there is a nice shelf south of bean that drops off to 50-60FOW. That's the GWS cruising zone.

Most guys think getting further south to SC SHOULD be safer.  Once you get north of SC you are for sure in the hot zone.  General thought here is to avoid the SMC in the fall.

thanks for the sharktober reminder. Although not new to the the ocean, i am still a freshie in the realm of kayak fishing, and am super excited about getting out there. That being said, i think i will either go to baker again tomorrow, or try to go from horseshoe cove to kirby and back.

Thanks again for the heads up

+1 on Sean's word. That spot to the south, while producing some of the best fishing in the area, has indeed led to some punctured kayaks. Can't argue with the sharktober theory as the GWS does come looking for Elephant Seals which increase in numbers about then. However if you look at the record, the "safer" periods like July, August have more attacks. Having watched  a 15' GWS flip FishingAddicts kayak in "safe" Capitola, in "safe" early (7-7-12) July, I now more than ever go by the old saying, "if the water tastes like salt, there are sharks in it."
IMHO when fishing an isolated section of coast, NEVER go alone and three is definitely better than two. Plus NEVER assume you are bullet or GWS proof. Hook up with  more experienced members. We've F...ed Up plenty and can hopefully help you avoid one or two pitfalls. Good luck

In the game of biggest fish, if you can't enjoy routinely gettin' your ass handed to you, by great fishermen, then you don't belong in the NCKA.
