Albacore fishing was incredible last Sunday on the New Huck Finn. Left the Emeryville harbor at 4am. 4-1/2 hours later, 17 miles west of Fanny Shoal, north west of the islands, we spotted boilers and started to troll.

As the first trolling rod was going into the rod holder, the deckhand Dave yelled "HOOKED UP!"  First stop first rod. That fish went into the box and two more on drifted live anchovies.   We then move on to troll, got hit, stopped to bait fish, then move on. This went on for around ten fish.

On the fourth stop, we bait fished for four hours. We landed a fish every three minutes. Constant multiple hook ups. We stopped at 109 albacore for 13. Incredible!

That's a mess of fish.  Thanks for the report.  I heard a crew of 4 got 99 up here mostly using hand lines.  Its been a banner year for albacore this year.  There has been, dorado, Bluefin, and skipjacks caught up here too.

We really do live in a special place.  There are lot of fishing choices. In the four trip back, there was time to reflect on what we have and dream about the future. You know, when do I fish again and for what and with whom.  I hope our fishing grounds are in good shape for our kids and theirs.

Very nice

Really miss fishing standing up, will have to conjure a way to get out there

I always wonder how people handle that many fish, must have a dedicated freezer?

Sin Coast: I was cramping for the last two hours and muscle spasms on forearms, biceps, back and neck.  I needed pain killers to stay asleep that night.  Totally worth it.

There were a couple of older guys who couldn't land their fish after awhile.  I ended up being one guys closer.  When he hooked up, we traded rods.  When I got one fish on the deck, he handed me another rod to bring in.

We didn't many fish.  I lost one when my line snapped.  I learned to cut off my section of my leader and re-tie my hook.  By the end of the trip, I was down to a foot on my second leader.  One guy lost three because his knot kept slipping.  Bad luck really.  Three of us tied for him and his line would somehow slip, but our knots held.

Blueyak: I bought a small chest freezer.  5 cubic feet of vacume sealed albacore.
Standing up was hard after awhile.  I sat and used the rail as a pivot.  I should have sat on the floor and pretended to be on a kayak.  I would have slid right up to the rail.  hahaha.

if anyone want to trade some albacore for other species meat (other than salmon), send me a pm.

I have been watching all these albacore reports...what does one of those trips cost?  I can't ever find a price since it usually depends on gas usage.

They are over $300. Average $330 plus tips.
It's a lot, but about the right value. You go out at least twice as far as the salmon grounds, and for 16 hours, as opposed to 8 or 9 hours, with live anchovies.  I don't think the captain's margins are better than salmon trips.  But I dont know. Plus the blood and clean up. I'm glad it's not my boat. There's a lot of blood. We had a constant red flow off the stern. The sharks circled the boat.
