Going there for the first time this Saturday.  I hear they have small mouth, LM, cats and stripers.  Do the stripers there hit bass lures or do most typically use bait when targeting them?  Never fished for land locked stripers before so any info on that will be great.

Hoping to get into some smallies and stripers!  Will work the usual bass stuff, but if you have any tips on getting at the SM/LM bass or stripers, please do share.   :smt003

Will post a report when I get back.  Thanks all.

I've found live bait for landlocked stripers is best HOWEVER lures work well too when they are on the feed.  I'll be down there doing some product testing in October so leave me some fish  :smt002 :smt003

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but the water level is so low, it's ugly. The majority of the lake is just a mud hole. Hard to believe they have remained open with these conditions. Fishing might be good due to the water level but half the experience is the beauty, and believe me, there's nothing pretty about that place now. I would go to Naci instead as there's more water and beauty to be found there, and it's only 5 or so miles away. Either way, hope you have a fun time and looking forward to a report.

I am aware of the low water levels.  Going there for the fishing but the lack of scenery will be a bust.  Half the reason for checking out new spots is for the scenery, but oh well, hopefully the fishing will be good.

I'd troll rapalas or swimbaits toward the dam. If you mark fish try to drop down a bucktail jig, spoon, or bait (anchovy/sardine/pile worms). All of the normal spots are high & dry, but for smallies I look for piled rocks (the kind crawdads like to hide in) or large boulders then work it with either crankbaits or finesse stuff depending on your mood/patience. Dropshotting works great, as well as TX or Carolina rigged plastics. But I prefer to pitch jigs like a 4" hula grub on a 3/8oz football head.
There's a lot of diversity in that lake. But sometimes it can be tough to fish--I've been skunked there a few times :-( Be careful motoring around with the low water levels. And if'n ya get into a wicked striper bite, remember that you don't need to keep your limit of 10 stripers (leave some for 2014 and beyond).
Oh yeah, good luck Won! I'm itching to sneak down there soon.

Correction ... my testing will be on Lake Nacimiento in October.  Catch all the stripers you want at San Antonio :smt003.

I don't know a thing about that lake but if you can get a hold of some fat shiner minnows work those deeper rock piles or ledges with a fish-finder type rig, ie.. sliding sinker (either egg or bullet shaped) a small split shot ahead of it and a sharp/thin hook. Set your leader length about 2 feet or so. This rig is the same set-up you would use for power bait type fishing. Tap the bottom with your sinker then raise it up a foot and half or so. Lip hook the minnows. Just slow drift or still fish it directly below the boat. The smallies etc. will find it if they're there.  Raise it up if a school comes through higher in the water column.

Old school, but it works.

Good luck!
