Met up with surfingmarmot and zeelander and Dan (Don't know his screen name).

We got on the water around 8:15 am to HOWLING whitecap wind, and it only got worse for the first few hours.

I got about halfway to where I wanted to go before I realized that I forgot my sunscreen  :smt011  Back to the car for me...

After I got the skin dope on I met up with zeelander and we paddled to where he had seen some crappie earlier in the week.  We left the marmot to find his way on the opposite side of the lake for a while with the promise to report on the radio if anything happened.

We got down to the arm that zeelander pointed us to and found Dan already there and on fish.  Stupid crappie were in the end of a creek arm in 10-20 feet of water right in the middle of the arm.  Don't they know they are supposed to be on main lake structure right now?

All three of us drifted through the school for several hours and caught a bunch of crappie.  I got about a dozen with 5 keepers and a bluegill.

Zeelander got 6 I think, and Dan got a couple and lost a real nice fish at the boat.

The marmot finally showed up after I attempted to hail him on the radio to no avail several times.  He had a crappie when I left him around 2.

That school is sitting on bait in the cove and looks to be going no where anytime soon so I am going to hit them again later this week.

Good eating tonight.

See my soon to be post on fish talk about parasites as I found a couple of worms in the bluegill, the crappie were pristine.

Right after you left, the bite turned on again--I caught six more (lreleased one dink). And many thanks to Chris (Molbasser)--he gave me the grub that did the trick. Mol, I ended up quiting because they chewed right through the tail! BTW, my daughters Red-eared Sliders also enjoyed a little raw fresh Crappie--they were fighting over it like dogs on a bone. LOL.

Excellent Marmot!!  I'm glad you got into them.

They had to spread out among the 4 of us who were hammering them, and when we boogied you had them to yourself.

Here is a shot of my fish:

And here is what was in the stomach of the biggest one......pretty big minnows!

Good times and good eats.

I might try to hit that after work this week. Would you mind hooking me up with the intel on location and lure?

Since you are the Big Cheese of the board and we all owe you so much for doing this, I guess we can make an exception to our policy of the sworn secrecy of the Brotherhood of the Crappie and give you the intel. IM me. Just kidding, but MoBasser is the pro--he has the G2 that's legit.

Bill,

We were in the rear 1/3 of the long snaking cove on the left side of the lake (relative to launching from the ramp).  You know, the cove past the tree where I embarrassed myself on that bass...

We were all using Kalin's triple threat jigs in the lemon merange color teamed on 1/16 oz. jigheads.  That actually might have been a bit heavy as the fish were no deeper than 15 feet.

Edit:  Check that, we were using Acid Rain color

Grub link

The fish are right in the middle of the arm, locate them with your sonar and your on to dinner.

Lemme know what day you might go and I may try to show up and get some more of them with you.

Do yourself a favor and scale down big time on the line.  I was using 2# test.

PM me your # if you want a more detailed explanation via voice.

A couple of notes.

I missed a ton of fish because I spent too much time with my rod in the rod holder drifting rather than in my hand.  The bite is pretty soft.

The wind on the main lake was zero issue in the cove.  Very calm.

The school is huge so we should be able to harvest a bunch of fish from it.

Edit:  I would use 1/32 or 1/64 leadheads (I think we were actually using 1/32) on these tiny jigs.  I sort of go by look and feel rather than confirmed weight (I bought the leadheads a long time ago and forget what I bought).  It takes a pretty whippy rod and light line to fish these baits properly.  I wouldn't personally go over 4# and prefer 2#, but Zeelander and Marmot both were using 6 or over and they caught fish.

All praise to Molbasser! I'd mentioned the place where I'd found some Crappie last week and they were still there but they were just barely biting on what I was throwing them. He gave me the freakin' secret weapon.. the acid rain Triple Threat!! Thanks for all your knowledge Molbasser, this newb appreciates it!

I ended up with a total of 9 Crappie (8 keepers) and 3 Bass (small). Had awesome fish tacos, Crappie's is good eats! :smt003

It was a great time and nice to meet ya Molbasser and Marmot. Will see you out there again. :smt006

It was very windy in Santa Cruz yesterday, all day.  Hopefully today will be different for your surfing.

No, it is the long snaking arm further up lake.

It is easy to find with either maps.google.com and the sattelite function or google earth.

On the lake; paddle up lake past the first big cove, as you continue up lake you will see a tiny cove with a downed eucalyptus tree in it, the long snaking cove is not far beyond that.

See that long snaking cove on the right on this map?  That is the one your looking for.
