I caught my first widow rockfish last Saturday. And I really regret that I didn't get a better picture when it was alive. But for reference, here's what they look like. Similar body shape as olive or yellowtail rockfish but more of a smallmouth bass pattern w/big eyes. Yes, that's the scientific description.

Way cool Pat!  Always love catching a new species.  What depth did you find the widow?

Delicious, one of my favorites, those and chili pepper rockfish.  Both often found together, in Huge schools and on canyon edges.

As you can probably surpise from the bugged-out eyes on those reds, I was fishing kinda deep. Like 200ft. Red scampi on 5oz head. (targeting bocaccio) It's the only widow we ever caught at this spot, but interesting to know they school. Thanks DC. The widow's body & eyes weren't as affected by the depth-change as most other rockfish.  I made fish tacos with it last night and it was delicious! Tonight it's grass rockfish. Then maybe vermillion if I don't give those fillets way.
It's always cool to catch new species. And it's been quite a while since I caught something new...I've got most of the fish on my rockfish ID chart crossed-off LOL

The one I ate was damn tasty too man. I also noticed the lack of barotruama and in reminded me of yellowtail rf as they usual don't show it either. Both come up pretty. :smt003

And usually both are suspended off the bottom too!

In more impressed that someone was intentionally targeting boccacios!  Those slime balls stink pretty bad and every one I've caught was loaded with worms.  :)

Don't widows grow extremely slow?
When they reach decent size they are older then dirt.
Correct me if I am mistaken.

Maybe something about a 24in fish for aoty.  :smt044 Commercially they don't sell.

The widow I ate was damn tasty and had a nice fillet to head ratio. No depth issues similar to yellow tail rf.
