I haven't been in the ocean kayaking only the American River, Sac River and local lakes. What is a basic check list of items I should round up to take part in this event?

I tried to call and make A reservation but the phone line isn't working and when I try to reseve A site online its says not unless im handicapped.. Someone help please.. Don't want to miss this one.
