I love crab and I would like to learn how to catch them. I have never kayaked on the ocean before, does this event require a beach launch?

Is this doable as a day trip from my area? Tent camping on the north coast in January doesn't seem doable. How long of a drive from say Lodi?

Yes, but possibly the easiest beach launch you can imagine. The one big concern at Doran is wind. It can turn on quick....BUT, you do not need to go far at all to drop your gear.
