Looking for something  reasonably priced. For the rod and based on what I read on older posts, I was considering Shimano Talavera (TEC70M). No specific idea on the reel though.

Everyone is going to tell you same thing. Ugly stik tiger rodd and Penn reel. Good setup for the money.

what's the budget/desire?

for cheap bulletproof go with:
Everyone is going to tell you same thing. Ugly stik tiger rodd and Penn reel. Good setup for the money.

I found my setup like this to be too heavy to fish with for long periods of fishing lures though. I use mine for trolling these days.

for really sweet rig that is worth the $ go with:
Travala   M with a avet sx

My two go-to rods these days are a mix of inexpensive and pricey. I'm running a Abu garcia 6500c3 on a Penn rod, rated 20-25 with 30lb braid as the cheaper model, .......and for the $$ option my fav is an avet SX paired with a calstar jig rod rated to 25-30, with 40lb braid.

Although I really like the avet I have, the little abu 6500C reel has held up really well to kayaking. I've used it to land lings, halis, and seabass, and even a salmon last year. An annual cleaning (brushing out accumulated salt and grease, lubing) and it is still smooth even if the case is beat to heck. I pulled in a 13# ling on the little abu/penn combo yesterday and it was really fun.

Trevala 70m or 66ml is a good rod, any low profile reel you like and can afford. Maybe some type of Revo?

For $200, you can get a Seeker American Series rod and a Peen reel (GT310/320 or 209) that will last forever.
Or a totally random lightweight combo that kicks ass: St Croix Mojo Inshore rod paired with a Shimano Caanen reel.

If you want to go bulletproof a Penn Sufmaster 100 is a good reel choice.  It's larger than the modern low-profile Revo-type reels but smaller than most any other old-school conventional reel, and simple to maintain.

Thank you all. I ended up getting a Ugly Stick Tiger 7' Mid-Light and a Shimano TRN-200G at Mel Cottons. I got both for $140 with tax....
