Went out Salmon fishing for my second time Saturday at Stillwater North. Trolled around with a deep six, with a flasher and a salmon rotary killer. About 3 hours in after checking my bait and dropping back down I hook a fish, end up fighting in for about 7 minutes with a couple good runs. Finally get it up by the yak and see color. This is where I could use a little advice, I have my line reeled to where the deep six is at the end of the pole, because of the bend the flasher is still in the water and the fish is under the boat. I go to grab the line and try to pull the fish from under the boat and it freaks out and breaks the line on the SRK and is gone. I know there is a learning curve but hoping to learn and not have to go through that again. How would some of you more experienced have landed the fish? Is having the deep six 4 feet of line to the flasher and 3 ft to the hook to much to land a fish easily. What is your favorite set up for salmon.
Thanks for the help.
Steve

I don't know how many times this needs to be stated.  Its not rocket science.  Make the leader lengths short enough that you don't have the problem your describing.

dodger/flasher to deep six - 18-24"
dodger/flasher to hooks  24-36"

If necessary, sit on dry land with rod in the air like your going to land a salmon.  Can you net it?
Your arms wingspan is a good general rule of leader length.

Salmon aren't line shy.  I use 60lb mono leaders

Last friday I followed Glen's (g-whiz) advice.  Deep six to the main line and just green RSK after the deep six.  Worked well.  Glen got his limit in less than hour in the water.

Yep!  Leader and everything shorter than your rod.

I spent last year "watching" salmon..."watching" BIG salmon come to the kayak and spit the hook at me.  I learned a lot and was more prepared this season.  First thing I learned was to get a bigger net - I was trying to net salmon using a small trout net!   :smt044.  Next, I shortened my setup so it's less than the length of my rod.  Finally, I never try to net the fish on its first visit to the kayak.  They make you think you can net them on the first try because they come straight for you, but don't even think about it!  I try to give them two or more good runs and hope they're tired before getting the net ready.  Get the fish tired and play them , they're on your time - you have all day.

I use a 7 foot rod, 36" from deep six to dodger, & 24" from dodger to hooks. Do not grab your line. Keep tension on the fish with your rod & use a large net.
If you can get the fish in the net quickly then do so. I've already lost two fish this year because I thought they were too hot to try to net. One broke my leader & the other spit the hooks. I might have boated both of these fish if I had quickly netted them. When you get your deep six or sinker release wound up to your rod tip get your net & start trying to boat your fish. If they run you will have a couple seconds to put the net down & start reeling again.
