In the end, I almost headded for the closest reef for a quick chance at a ling.  But couldn't bare the thought of gut hooking a bunch of small rockfish with my whole squid's, so I just drifted some more for butts.   :smt004

Some days it's just fishing  :smt001, but looks like a great one.

Curious, I often fish for lings/rf with whole squid and have only had one gut hook ever. I wonder what we do differently?

Way to get out there Al. Bro, I will never forget my first time fishing Capitola with you. I caught my PB halibut there remember? Love the video you took of me while fighting my fish.

I'm using a trap rig with a large treble at the bottom in freespool.  Somehow whenever I do that and catch lings they get hooked way too deep and are a pain to release.

I use two single 5/0 with the trailing hook buried pretty deep in the squid head, maybe that makes the difference ...
