That's no monster gar.  I have caught bigger on a trot line.  They aren't that dangerous or hard to handle, but they do taste good since they eat live fish.  Just nail it to a tree or board and get out your tin snips and cut the skin open then filet as normal.  Nice clean white meat

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Standing on a muddy bank and discharging a handgun in the general direction of your friend and a quality kayak. Hmmm... Hey guys, at least have a little respect and consideration for a good kayak  :smt012

Trot lines legal for Gar?
Or is this the only state they are illegal in?

How do they taste?

Well sure, you can shoot them in the head if you WANT to, I prefer to get them looking at me, flex, and they usually realize that any resistance if futile, and give up the will to live right then and there.. cleaner meat too. :smt109
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

As long as the fish isn't wasted and is within the law, I'd rather see it dispatched quickly than left to rot on a stringer or the bank.

Dead fish is a dead fish, but a large powerful darting fish and two people in close proximity on a slippery, uneven riverbank, plus a handgun = disaster waiting to happen
