I'm trying to label a little page on rockfish types and regulations but for some reason navigating the dfg website is not something I am able to do...so here goes. What am I missing? Is my information correct?

General Bag limit: 10 per day

Lingcod: 22 inches, limit 2

Cabezon: 15 inches, limit 3 within general bag limit of 10

California Scorpionfish: 10 inches, limit 5

Bocaccio: limit 3

Greenling (kelp/rock): 12 inches

Cowcod: Zero limit
Yellow eye: zero limit
Canary: zero limit
bronzespotted: zero limit

The rest of the rock fish have no size limit (??? I always thought it was 12 inches)

Shore fishing is year round.

Is anything here incorrect? Am I missing anything? Anything I need to remember?

thanks!

Thanks for the thread. I'm awaiting replies, because it's confusing navigating the info to say the least.

I always recommend reading the regs yourself, cuz it will be on you if you get a ticket for something...but here is the basic info for fish I run across the most:

RCG bag limit=Rockfish, Cabezon Greenling

10 fish total
3 cabezons min 15 inches within that 10
10 greenling min 12 inches within that 10
No min. size on rockies

Lingcod are in addition to your 10 fish RCG limit
2 lings per day, min 22 inches

Halibut are 3 per day. Minimum 22 inches

20 fish TOTAL bag limit
So can have your 10 RCG, 2 lings, 3 halibut and then 5 perch or whatever.

Hope that helps.

Sincerely,

Jim

Also know the season and max depth limit for each groundfish management area.

Plus know where the closed MLPA reserves are located.

Since the ocean is upside down up here for the next week and no halibut are showing in the bay yet, I have time to do this write up this weekend. I'll make it with being searchable in mind, with citations and links to the regs, for the northern zone. Perhaps someone south can fill on the blanks and I can add it to the top post.

Since this is a confusing area, and there are lots of new fisherman here, it seems like a worthwhile endeavor. It will always be a work in progress with no pride of authorship, being right and being easier to navigate than the regulations are key.  There are also changes every year. I'll also try to answer questions. Easy questions will be first. Hard questions (like can I use a bang stick to land a barn door halibut) might take a few months. I can ask the hard questions to the attorney in the DA's office who prosecutes fish and game violations here, and might or might not get an answer, but it will be looked at and have people thinking about it anyway.

I'll shoot for a first draft by Saturday night.

My point was that the regs don't answer your question.  It doesn't say that sanddabs don't count against the general limit of 20, only that there is no limit on them.  Since we are running into some silly and literal interpretations of laws around here, I would not be comfortable saying that you can take more than 20 sanddabs while in possession of any other fish.

I do it, as my freezer with 1k+ pacific herring will attest, but I'm not sure it is legal under a strict reading of the regs.  There is a rule of construction in the law that says that the law will interpret any ambiguity in favor of the criminal defendant, but that doesn't mean that a warden couldn't write you a ticket and you'd have to go fight it in court.
