Plenty of crappie in this area. And I bet the same tactics you used in TX will work here. Make sure to get the 2-rod stamp so you can double-dip and soak different types of bait til you figure out what's working. But I'd suggest small minnows, mini crawlers or redworms, meal worms, or crappie jigs (I prefer plastic tubes or curly tails but those maribou jigs work too). Good luck & welcome to CA!

You can catch Crappie in most the lakes in the bay area but the big ones are in Clear Lake or the Delta and I am talking in the 16" to 18" size. When the bite is on in Clear Lake its worth the trip if you are into Crappie. Loads of fun on a fly rod.

Welcome aboard mbc. Keep a eye out on the hookup and if you want to fish that day and you still don't have a kayak, almost everybody here has a loaner yak you can borrow for the day. Hope to learn some crappie fishing technique from you.

Don't know about the bay area but I've caught crappie at lake Amador, delta and knights landing.

MBC  welcome and I must thank you for taking my place in the bay area. You are with a great bunch of great fellows willing to teach you what they know. I am now in your neck of the woods in Texas;north of Dallas and will soon be fishing for crappie and sandbass here once I get all settled in.

We do really well at the Indian Beach Resort in Clear Lake. They have live wells built in there dock and a lot of crappie and catfish around it. The cabins are nice and reasonably priced and if you stay there you can fish the lit docks all night. Last year we limited most nights on crappie 1-2.5 pounds.

This state is full of great places for Crappie. But it is a little different than back east. We tend to have great quality of fish and not so much quantity. So "filling your ice chest" might not be as easy, but it won't take as many with fish like these;

  Yeah, I'd rethink using 3 rods out here, I don't know for certain, (Too lazy at the moment to really look it up) but 3 rods might not sit well with out game wardes out here.  Could be wrong?  Why risk it?  I'm sure someone here know more bout this than I.

If you are in fresh water in California, then max 2 rods if you have purchased your second rod validation. There are special conditions for specific (usually native) fishes, but for the most part it is two rods max.
