They used to be all ten pound 30 inch fish :smt010

No kidding... It was like catching clones.  There were the occasional bigger fish, but the huge majority were exactly what you said... which was freaking awesome.

They are getting bigger and less plentiful... by the day.  Here's to catching a real monster in fisheries dying days!

Boy, this thread got depressing fast.

So they're planting trout now?  Guess that means the remaining stripers are eating good.

not boasting here, but in these two pictures, you can see the lack of nutrition they were being subject to, by the snakeyness of them.  :smt009

What time of year was that Adam?  I have never caught a skinny striper in mendo like that... most have big round bellies like some of your earlier pictures.

They always seemed to be fat in the spring and skinny in the fall.

I suppose that makes sense.  They get real hard to find in the warm summer months as the water temps go through the roof.  Then in october/november they start boiling up all over the place on a shad killing rampage.  Guess they are putting their winter coats back on at that point.

Most of the stripers we caught in '09 and '10 looked like that. It wasn't a Summer vs Winter thing....it was just the beginning of the end for them. It was when the water was super low. I have tons of pics of little skinny snakes. 32" fish that shoulda been ~12lbs, but were really 6 or 7lbs. I'm guessing it was just due to the stress of the lowering water level, because there was still tons of bait in the lake for them to eat.

Well, if there is any good news in this... The fish I caught last spring were back to being fat and healthy.  Man, this thread is bumming me out.  I spent so many spring and early summer nights on that lake trolling in the dark knocking the hell out of stipers.  Great memories, that can't really be relived.  Whats really a bummer, is that the last several years where stripers were planted, it wasn't the state funding it at all... If I remember right, it was the local chapter of the CSBA.  When they closed up shop, there were no more plants.  I wonder if there is anything that could be done?
