my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I don't want any help catching my halibut and I don't think an assisted catch should count in a tournament.

I agree with you in principle, but you're sitting in a high seat to throw that down on the rest of us - having caught more pacific hailbut from a kayak than anyone in California that we know of!  Bask in the glow of your own accomplishment, Rob - it's a good one!   :smt001

The reason I am 100% for allowing assisted landings at GS is that in REAL fishing we help each other according to how much we can help and how much is wanted.  If a big halibut got away due to people not wanting to help and take away from the individual accomplishment of catching it single handedly I think we'll be more likely to be regretting that we didn't get to see a big hali come in!  But at the same time, ideally I don't want any help either.   :smt001  End of threadjack.

I too want to know how much for a matching set of killing tools from Piscean Artworks.  I'd give the components out as prizes at GS8...

Great stuff!   :smt007

+1   Well said.       It makes me nervous letting others help, but at the same time I feel like I'm sharing the catch  by doing so.
                           Sean,    Man,   I WANT that !  :smt007

+2...

Those beast are quite a force, especially getting into 100lb + range...  I consider myself a fairly competent kayakfisherman while on the Big Blue and have caught big fish...  my two hook ups nearly capsized me a 1/2 dozen times...  big fish in big swell definitely was a factor...  I'm Glad that Eric is putting in the assist, it's a dangerous fish to do close combat with...

But I do like GB2's " Cage " concept ....   :smt075

and Ya, I would bite on the Tribal Outfit Hali Clan Harpoon set....  Strong Work PISCEAN and looking forward to seeing you at GS7    :smt006

I would like to buy a harpoon you made.

I too want to know how much for a matching set of killing tools from Piscean Artworks.  I'd give the components out as prizes at GS8...

I would like to have a few items with me @ GS7 for trade (abs? :smt003), plus a donation to the event. No promises though since I am putting in a fenced mini orchard in the next month & so will be busting a** to get that done before the deer arrive to eat my new fruit trees. I have to design 2 big wooden gates for it too.

Still need to work out $/time for pricing on the fishing tools. A guesstimate on the harpoon would be about $100.
A full set of 'poon, kage, billy, gaff, & knife? I would roughly guess around $300, depending on parts costs.

I'll plan to bring my burner so if anyone has wood items they would like decorated etc., I might be able to do some stuff while I am there (but I hope not 'cause if I had time to do that it would mean blown out conditions :smt002).

Anyway, thanks for the interest. Again, it never occurred to me to use the harpoon as an art piece ...until it was finished. I'll totally have some custom tools at the show in July. Wish I could be building them right now rather than working in an office!

Yeeeah...I think I would go lighter on the cable if I had it to do again (this was the thinnest cable Homedepot had and it seems a bit overkill).
I did file down the little swage so that it doesn't have any sharp edges.  It didn't have any trouble piercing the sack of soil through a tarp. I should try it on a wet phone book.
The dart is so sharp that I think it will work regardless of the cable. I sure hope to find out :smt003

To give it a real selling point I think it needs some real blood on it.  :smt007

I was thinking about it, and actually the cable has some benefit in that it acts as a stop for the rod when the dart slips on to it. The force applied to drive the dart home all ends up on the little piece of cable that goes through the dart. So I think coated wire of some type so that it won't fray too quickly. But the cable through the dart is the spot to watch for wear after spearing a dozen or so monsters :smt044

I know! For the time being it is all pretty and no proof.

I trolled the aquahunter website to see how the guys there build the kages. Consensus was that 6" is plenty to seat the rod without splitting the handle, plus the protection of the metal sleeve. Then I went to some east coast tuna & broadbill sites and basically copied the commercial design. In the end what I made is a miniature California style swordfish harpoon.

Been out of town all last week so I just got a chance to read this.  That harpoon came out really cool; rustic but modern and functional.  Love the classic Piscean style.

What skills you have Sean!  :smt002  That thing looks deadly for sure!  All those HI video's make me want one too  :smt044  I have a kid's putter club that Quinn broke the head off of that I'm thinking of turning into a Hali spear.  Wont look pretty, but i'm sure the fish will get the 'point'  :smt005

I think that a broken putter would totally work! And the handle would have a nice grip on it. I varnished the handle on mine, so if it is too slippery I may sand it a little. Hate have it slip at the wrong time.

For me the tricky part will be handling the line and float. The guys in HI have it easier since they are actually spearing the fish and just tethering the kage to the kayak. Loose line always makes me nervous. I might just wrap it on the float like some of the crab guys do.
