f.i.n.a.l.l.y. finished the harpoon with which I hope to one day have to use on a big halibut :smt003.
I went whole hog and used stainless for the lilly rod and dart.

I cut threads into the rod and screwed it 6" into the handle with some 2 ton marine epoxy.
The end caps are copper since that was all I could easily find and the handle is hardwood dowel.
I heated the dart to red and hammered it into shape, then ground it to a lethal sharpness and then looped it onto some coated cable. I think I would use heavy wire leader if i had it to do over again.
I finished the spear with some translucent green stain (to match one of my fav custom rods) and 4 coats of varnish.
Total length is about 5 1/2 feet. Still not sure if that is too long or just right.
I have the dart attached to 12 feet of line and an old seasoned crab float. The line and dart are secured by a rubber band.

A really fun project, and I'm pleased with how it turned out. I tested it on an old tarp over a bag of potting soil and it worked like a charm, the dart releasing and toggling, and the line pulling out from the rubber band.
I may build another since I ended up with enough rod and tubing left over.

The only problem is that if you lose it it will be hard to claim since it looks so common.  :smt044
Job well done. I hope you get to put it to good use very very soon.

That's friggen Awesome Piscean....

No joke on possibly needing it...  twice at the Cove, in some pretty decent wave action, I've hooked up...  almost capsized a couple times on runs and being on the bad side of a swell... lost both fish with just a little bit of slack....

the whole time I wondering,  "if this is such a chore... WTF am I going to do if I get this sucker to color...?"  :dontknow:

Beautiful work a usual, I'm going to get something going for the Cove, but I think it will be a bit more Cromag in it's design ...  :smt075

I WILL be putting a harpoon to use this summer on a 70+lb halibut. :smt002

I would like to buy a harpoon you made.  I can also put you on a pacific halibut or at least try.  I caught 4 off the yak last summer and 2 off the boat too.

Nice Sean!!! Really tribal. You need a WSB stone pendant to go with it. I think the Sur crew has enough harpoons for GS7. Funny thing is that it will probably be KEN who hooks the shooter.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 I am working on a Kage for close combat.

so true!
I would be just as happy to assist in a landing such a fish :smt001. Pity the halibut that is caught by Team BSC, there will be a charge of backup anglers all trying to spear the beast before it escapes :smt005
Building this made me want to make a whole matching arsenal from harpoon, kage, gaff, and 2 filet knives (one breaking blade and one filet blade). Would make an interesting display at the summer show :smt004.

I don't want any help catching my halibut and I don't think an assisted catch should count in a tournament.

I don't want any help catching my halibut and I don't think an assisted catch should count in a tournament.

I agree with you in principle, but you're sitting in a high seat to throw that down on the rest of us - having caught more pacific hailbut from a kayak than anyone in California that we know of!  Bask in the glow of your own accomplishment, Rob - it's a good one!   :smt001

The reason I am 100% for allowing assisted landings at GS is that in REAL fishing we help each other according to how much we can help and how much is wanted.  If a big halibut got away due to people not wanting to help and take away from the individual accomplishment of catching it single handedly I think we'll be more likely to be regretting that we didn't get to see a big hali come in!  But at the same time, ideally I don't want any help either.   :smt001  End of threadjack.

I too want to know how much for a matching set of killing tools from Piscean Artworks.  I'd give the components out as prizes at GS8...

Great stuff!   :smt007

+1   Well said.       It makes me nervous letting others help, but at the same time I feel like I'm sharing the catch  by doing so.
                           Sean,    Man,   I WANT that !  :smt007

Funny, I'm so not used to thinking about competition I didn't even realize the whole "assisted landing" issue was even as issue. I would be totally fine with handing the harpoon over to anyone should they need it, I would not have to throw the spear myself. I am always nervous when assisting others landing their fish, since I am then partially responsible if the fish escapes. BUT I still go for it anyway when need arises. For me it is about disconnecting the "what if it gets away" part of my brain and focusing only on landing said sea beast.

Thanks for all the compliments guys.
There will certainly be more to come in regards to custom fishing implements this year.  I once did some sketches for a "waterworld" type of graphic story and did a whole page on the watercraft and tools of a giant fish hunting people. My harpoon design is right from those sketches. I figured each "hunter" would have a harpoon, lance, billy, and a few knives (utility, chopper or breaking blade, and fine fillet blade) and all would have the "clan" decoration to identify them. ( I also had the hunters tattooed with charts like how WW2 airmen would stitch maps into their flight jackets :smt044).

Anyway, thanks for looking and we'll see where this idea goes next.
