Recently inherited my wife's Toyota 4Runner, and am looking to get a better rack for the yaks (just has the factory rails/crossrails now).

Found this thread from 2009:

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=21465.0

Any other suggestions/ideas for a good rack to carry multiple kayaks on the 4Runner? Or anybody have one they want to sell?

I am technically challenged so the easier the install is the better.

Thanks in advance!

Jim

Thule racks strap right to the bar that runs length-wise down the truck. Probably the easiest racks to mount ever. With the long bars you can carry two yaks....more if you stack 'em right.

That's how I roll.

You can carry 2 yaks on the factory crossbars if you get a J-rack. Then just strap one yak on normally & the second yak in the j-rack.

Thanks Pat...I don't know what a J rack is, but I kinda like the bar style ones a lot of guys have...think I could strap two regular yaks on side by side and then the bigyak on top of those.

Thinking maybe these will do it:

Not sure if 96 inches is overkill for laying two yaks side by side? What do you think?

Jim,

96" is way overkill, kinda like your handshake :^). The beam in your yak is about 30", so 2 would be around 60 or so inches.

The other issue with the 96", is they will overhang so much there is the risk of someone smacking their head (or worse) while walking by.

Cheers from Tennessee!!!

Rich

The other lengths I see are 65 and 78...

65 sounds like it should be good for two yaks side by side without hanging over too much? But maybe 78 is better just to have a little extra on each side...

Jim,

you have used my 4runner rack, yakima round bar, many times. We have strapped 3 kayaks up there no prob, 2 of them were yours.

I have the 78" bar.

Yup, that's the one. I'll measure my bars tonight and see what I have. I'm pretty sure I have the 65" bars.

OR it works as good vehicle theft prevention. Remember Weimarian's post about his yak rack knocking a tweeker senseless? :smt044

But seriously, 78 is plenty wide enough.
Under duress I once carried 2 double and 3 single sea kayaks from Pyramid lake to SF on a Con-Ferr rack that was all of 48" wide.*
