Well just got back from spending three weeks taking care of my mom in HI she's near the end with cancer. Was a sad time for me but she really wanted me to do some fishing and she was doing stuff at the hospital. Luckily I got to go out with Andy Cho and Rob (kau grown) the last two days. Andy was great and showed me the ropes and caught my bait the entire time. One of the most challenging things to fishing pelagics from a kayak in HI is catching Opelu (mackerel) for live bait.  In fact I've never caught one including when I used to live there and fish all the time.  My first day I had a really large hook up from an Ono. It peeled off a ton of line and then made a run straight at me. Did that several times before finally breaking me off. Heartbreaker, but was fun. The second day I hooked up three times. The first was an enormous fish that nearly spooled me making a straight run dragging my kayak fast enough to make a wake. After getting most of my line back it made another run straight down and pulled the hooks. It was like hooking up to the back of a truck and having it take off.  Hooked up two more times and lost those too. Even without landing a fish it was life time experience.  Andy caught some nice fish including a few 125 lb yellow fin tuna and a bunch of Ono.

Thanks for sharing your report and great pics.  I know it would be a blast battling big tuna from a kayak.
