Mickfish,

That must be some of the video Joe (bluefin) and his buddy took.  This pool is right behind my cabin in Cazadero.  We were staying up there the weekend of Crabfest and I had scallen and a few others up for the weekend.  I had just been commenting to scallen that in the 10 years I had been going up there, I had never seen a steelhead in that creek.  Well, not more than 2 minutes later, one jumped.  We had stumbled upon a pod of 25 steelhead.  They are stuck in this hole during this low water.  I let Joe know about it and he went up to film.  A couple weeks later I went back up and they were still there.   And ... I also I found another hole further downstream that had 40 steelhead in it.

Nice vid! I thought that water looked fishy. Hope the water doesn't get too low before they get a chance to move on.

I too would like to know what kind of camera and the set up used to get that footage.
That was no easy task.

It is silty and slow.  Right above that pool is a shallow rapid that the steelhead would have to work really hard to get through in the low water.  That's why they are holed up here.  I'm guessing they are still there as there hasn't been a significant rain event since then.  This would not be a good place for them to spawn.  They need some water to get up above Cazadero to the section that is less silty and more pool-drop-pool with gravel, cobblestone, and shade.

Allen,
Yes, this is the video Justin took, sorry to not get it to you sooner.  The camera was a GoPro extended out on a piece of wood.  Justin took all the video freediving about 5-6 feet down in this pool.  As you can see in the video, the females are ready to spawn as their eggs are distended.  Hopefully the rain this week gets them up.  I have seen similiar situations in the Navarro River, Salmon Creek, Lagunitas Creek and in many other places in Austin creek.  Rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
