Hey guys, looking for a little help.  I submitted a perch I caught yesterday for AOTY but I could not get its tiny mouth closed.  I looked at the top 3 perch pics from last year and they all appear to have the mouth open.  I understand that a rule is a rule but how do I get a perch's mouth closed?

Thanks,
Josh

It's much easier when they are alive. Also it should be taken with a kayak in the picture, and not your tile kitchen floor. Last year the mouth could be slightly ajar. This year closed or no go. I force the fish to the front of the board and push its mouth closed against the front of the board.

You need to shut the mouth with your hands then hold the fish up against the headboard to keep it closed. The. Take the pic with your free hand. Nice perch! You can do it. I'm sure.

You can't use  last years entries as examples.  Last year we allowed the mouth to be slightly ajar.  This year we are requiring completely shut.

Perhaps take the picture before rigo sets in with the mouth frozen open?

Josh,

You can take your pic anywhere, the rules don't say you should have your kayak in the picture.  I like that tile on your back patio area, I am thinking of doing mine in something similar.

Looking forward to fishing with you this year.

Aaron

Take some, but save some for later.

That's a good point. We should have the kayak in the pic. Mods?

I join AOTY each year but don't usually post fish, but a couple years ago I thought I'd throw a few on the board.

I had a nice rockfish but left the camera at home, when I got home the mouth wouldn't close at all. Having read some of the mouth flack I actually wired it shut by running a fine steel wire up thru the bottom lip out thru the top lip, a quick twist to pull the mouth closed, tuck the wire outta site under the fish for asthetics and snapped the pic, a bit of a PITA, but no problems with the pic.

Overkill, yeah probably, the first time it took a few minutes to think about it and work it out, if I need to do it again, it'll just take a sec.

Nice Perch!!!

Last year was my first year seriously kayak fishing.  It was awesome!  I learned sooooo much and most all of it from this site and the incredible people that contribute.  I entered AOTY to be more a part of the NCKA community.  This forum is one of the only places I see true selflessness and I am always amazed by the generosity of everyone here.

I love friendly competition and don't want to hear any whining when I win AOTY!

Gotta catch me another perch now.  Bigger this time!

Thanks for everything,
Josh
