Last year at exactly this time o' year I visited Moonstone beach. We not only watched two guys surf fishing load a bucket with slab perch (like over a pound each of barred, calico, and black perch-they had maybe a half dozen total and were hooking more) while demolishing a case of keystone ice :smt044 BUT we also watched a guy fly fishing in the river land and release a steelhead of about 8 pounds.
Moonstone is a bit south but a really neat beach for rocks & shells too.

I was really impressed by the perch catch. The guys were using shrimp on standard hi-lo surf rigs with about #1 hooks.

There is some decent perching actually right in San Simeon too.

There are a ton of cool coastal access spots a bit south between Cambria & Cayucos. lots of MFE holes in there.

If she is a rockhound consider driving a bit further north to Jade Cove. Great pickings there for Cali jade.

Prekids, I used to take Carrie to down there every February around Valentines. And we'd stay at the Motel 6 in San Simeon. It's a really cool area. I've caught fish off the Hearst pier casting to the south towards those isolated patches of rocks & kelp. And perch along the beach north of the pier. Also caught a big cab near Pico Ck once. Let me know if you wanna borrow some tackle. There are some killer looking spots up the coast towards Piedras Blancas but the damn elephant seals & sealions take over the good spots! Defintiely drive up and checkout those beasts.

The best perch area is where the river enters the sea. There is a wash rock there and fish just north of the rock.
