A few months back, i got stopped by CHP for making an illegal left turn. When I went to get my wallet on the floor, they saw a gun magazine clip right next to it and "restrained" me while they searched the vehicle. Everything was okay after they ran the gun and it was registered to me; and the gun was stored separate from the loaded magazines, but at the time I had the gun stored in a lock box under the seat.

4 of the officers informed me that it was illegal to store it within reach of the driver, but 1 of them knew that a jeep does not have a trunk and the security drawer was made for that purpose in jeeps.

So to comply, I installed another "Tuffy" rear security drawer in the rear of the jeep where I now plan to tranport the gun and magazines. My question is:

Since the gun is not within reach of the driver, can I had rounds in the magazine right next to the gun and have the gun empty?

The gun has to be locked away from the ammo.
Example: Gun in cab/ Ammo locked in trunk
Ammo in cab/ Gun locked in trunk

They can never be together while traveling.

It was all good, I cooperated fully with them: I understand what they have to deal with. They were cool and didn't cite me for my bad left turn; we even had a bunch of laughs over my sting ray injury when the saw my meds. But they opt'd not to take a photo opt of me in cuffs with guns drawn... :smt044

Guess I'll store the "loaded" magazines in the old security drawer to be in full compliance; and keep the empty magazines in the drawer with the unloaded gun.

It just looks so nice to cool to see them in the drawer all loaded :smt007 :smt007.

Just for contrast...In Idaho it is perfectly legal to have a loaded handgun on your dashboard as long as it is in plain sight.  35 years there and never any issues from LEO's and I was pulled over twice with said gun on dash.  One asked if it was loaded the other just gave me a warning about a burned out headlight and never said a word about the gun.  I miss real freedom.

Amen. I got pulled over in mendo county and had a loaded .357 in the door,(on the way back from a week long hunting trip). The officer asked if I had any weapons and of course I said yes. I told him it was in the door and was loaded. He opened the door, ran the gun, which came back to me. Said if I were in Sonoma co. I'd get hooked. Gave me the gun back and a warning for speeding and asked about our trip. That was about 15 years ago. Now I probably would have went to jail.

What about when you are hunting, or on your way to or from hunting?  You are allowed to have a loaded firearm in the vehicle in reach as long as there is not a round chambered and it is not concealed.  A Glock, for instance can have a loaded clip as long as there isn't one in the pipe, while a revolver may be harder to prove that it was not chambered once the cylinder is opened.  If you get a CCW you can carry it concealed in the vehicle loaded and chambered, but it has to be concealed or it could be considered brandishing.

There are exceptions to the rules in each city or county, national and state parks, national forests and BLM land, etc.  If you are going to travel with a firearm you should check with the local municipalities that you will be visiting or traveling through.  Know the law and have a copy of the code with you while traveling.  It's the only way to be sure you are legal.

100% correct.

Sorry but you are 100% incorrect.

You can have a loaded magazine in the same container as a firearm if it is in a locked container in California.  It can be sitting right next to the gun.  It just can not be in the gun.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

I am only stating California law and not laws for other states.

That code doesn't mention ammo, just the firearm.  Do you know the code pertaining to ammo?
