So spent a wonderful 2 hours at the DMV today to registering my adventure island just to get told I don't need to. I argued with the nice lady for a minute then she finally asked her supervisor who went and looked up the regs. Yup need cf numbers. Then after paying the bill I look at the recipt and see alternate fuel tax how funny is that. Sorry for the rant thanks for listening.

wow! is that how much is going to cost you a year. and why do you have to register your AI. I thought that only applies if you plan on  putting a motor on it.

If you put a motor on it or a sail, it's the law to register it.  Even if it's just a little electric motor used just once or a sail just once.  It could be sited by an LEO.

I don't know if I had to pay that much though.  I'll go check and get back with you....

Not sure why they charged the penalty since you just got it?

Also, there was mention of someone from DMV asking if the sail was going to be used more than 50% of the time (heading into that gray area/open to interpretation instead of it having to be registered if a sail is going to be used at any point).

Since it's already registered, slap on a motor!  :smt002

From http://www.dmv.ca.gov/boatsinfo/boatreg.htm

Quote
The following vessels do not have to be registered in California:

Vessels propelled solely by oars or paddles.
Nonmotorized sailboats that are eight feet or less in length.
Nonmotorized surfboards propelled by a sail and with a mast that the operator must hold upright.
    A ship’s lifeboat (a dinghy is not a lifeboat).
Vessels currently and lawfully numbered (registered) by another state that are principally used outside California.
Vessels brought into California for racing purposes only (exempted only during races and tune-ups).

You got screwed. I paid $29 registration fee and $10 late fee because I did not register mine within 20 days of purchase.  $39 total for me.  I already have my "Pink Slip" or State of CA - Certificate of Ownership.

I brought a Hobie Catalog so the DMV clerk could see what a Hobie AI is with and without amas and a sail.  She and her supervisor got a clear picture.

Just a heads up, the penalty is controlled by the "first date of use".
