So I had formerly used the duct seal method to install my ff and I disliked the performance. After doing some research I realised that I had installed the xducr backwards... LOL! Since I'm redoing it I thought I'd try something

Omg wasn't done typing my previous post...
Anyways,
So I'm reinstalling my xducer. And I'm thinking about putting the xducer inside a lockable Tupperware so I don't have to refill it with water. What I'm planning is to cut out a foam and inserting it inside the Tupperware to reduce the amount of water needed. Then sealing the whole thing with goop and hooping it down to the hull with additional foam cutout around the tupper.
Pictures to come, currently away from the project cuz I'm out of goop. But input welcome.

It's for additional sensors if u want to buy them. I think speed/water temp sensors that are sold separately.

I think each layer of plastic that your transducer signal has to go thru will decrease it's sensitivity.

Bingo...

I think each layer of plastic that your transducer signal has to go thru will decrease it's sensitivity.

I ditched the thru hull setup months ago for a home made scupper set up... helped a lot.

So if I'm reading this right, you are just going to set the tupperware down inside the hull?  Any airspace what-so-ever between the tupperware and the hull will destroy your signal.

Yep what he said.  The Ultrasonic pulses won't pass through an airgap (or bubbles in goop)Thats why water is used inside duct seal or foam method.

The bottom of the tupperware is cutout also and I stuffed the Tupperware with a foam cutout. The foam will also have a snug cutout for my xducer. Just like a foam puck but I will have a lid on top so I can insert water and not have to worry bout the water coming out. The xducer is sitting against my hull. Once again, will have pictures tomorrow cuz I'm terrible at play by plays :p

that makes way more sense.... so the bottomless tupperware is going to be sealed to the hull by a foam donut and some sealant... cool.

cut out the bottom of the tupperware then goop all the way around then get a piece of pool noodle with the inside cut out to fit the transducer, and stuff it inside the tupperware.  put a hole on the tupperware cover and run the wire through it.  put water and snap tupperware cover and you're set. :smt003

I didnt have any luck with my 385 ci di shooting thru the hull. The down scan had a hard time "seeing" anything.  It's much better to have it in clear water thru a scupper or over the side.

Hopefully you'll have better luck then me.

With the down imaging FF, I would install the transducer in the water to get the best signal. The options are scupper, rudder, suction cup or drop in mount. All have their pros and cons but the rudder mount would be my choice. The reason is that the transducer is far enough from the mirage drive so cavitation shouldn't be a problem especially if you mount it to the bottom of the rudder and not too far behind you since the outback is  a short boat.

Scupper installations on kayaks which are not designed for it can add friction when paddling over heavy kelp. They are also more vulnerable to damage when dragging the kayak. On my AI, I have a water bath shoot through in the center hatch which I can convert to a drop in mount when I need water temp or better signal. The hatch is ajar so I can't use the drop in while under sail or rough conditions although I cover it with a rubber mat which keep out almost all water. If you go with a water bath install, mount it where you can add the water while on the water. Half of the time I forget to add the water.
