Get the Funk outta my Face!

I know this  subject may have been discussed once or twice in the past, but was just wondering how often do you wash you kayak?

After returning from the HMB Crab Opener, I was too tired to do anything but just park the kayak and trailer in the garage; (I even forgot to put away a bag of bait I left on the dryer and the wife was not to happy about that the next day ).

Well it being the 3rd day, i notice that the smell was getting worse than before, so I opted to wash the kayak after getting home from work. Not only was the smell bad from the stale ocean water in the kayak, but there was a large piece of squid under the seat .

So I broke out the power washer and blasted the whole damn thing down; and throw in some beach and dishwashing soap in the hull to knock down the smell...

Whats your method for getting rid of the funk?

Bleachy soapy water is about all I have ever thought of.

Us dishwasher soap with bleach! Brush it on and let it sit for a while then blast it off.

I Just spray it off with the hose when i get home. But i dont catch any fish to get my yak dirty!

  seriously,,,   Use warm water with the detergent to help dissolve the oils.

Nah some bleach and soapy water works fine

I use dish washing detergent and a stiff brush.  The key to getting the stink out is drying the inside of the hull.  I park mine on the driveway and let gravity move all of the funky water to the rear of the hull.  I usually either dry it out with an old towel or the shop vac.  When finished, I spray fabreeze into the hatch openings and let it air out with the hatches open.

I'm not a big fan of bleach for cleaning up after fish.  Amino compounds (like trimethylamine) are responsible for da fishy stank, which diminishes when the compounds are protonated to the ammonium cation (lemon wedge anyone?)   

I like plain soap and water (though I haven't had to deal with this problem in many moons now...)

I've been using this big gallon jug of carwash soap. After a hose down I dump a little on a brush or white scotch-brite pad & then scrub the gunk that the hose wouldn't wash away. I leave the center hatch open when not using the kayak to air out the hull.

hahaha... this was the first time in a LONG time that I washed off the kayak.... same reason; I didn't wanna wash off my mojo.....  but the aroma of rotting squid was too unbareable.....

did it smell like the RV fridge????

I've only ever sprayed them down with the hose.

I've never left the seat on though!   

Soap, Guys?  Really?!   

A dash of Simple Green really goes a long way...
