Eric - I was in the same situation as you. My wife has long commute so we decided on Camry Hybrid as a family car.  17 gallons gets you close to 700 miles.  Even tells you how many miles go can drive.  Still kept the Chevy Tahoe gas hog that gets 15 miles average for yakking. 

Jetta TDI puts that 37 mpg to shame. My wife's car averages around 45mpg. It will snap your head back when the turbo hits too. Diesel is more expensive but we fill it up a lot less.

I can definitely see you in a Volvo wagon.

I'm kinda in the same situation. Looking to swap my Mustang for a SUV or wagon (can't fit the kids in back haha). I want to get a 4runner bub wife wants a Subaru. So I'm looking @ OB wagon or newish Forester...the newer body style looks much better. What about the Impreza wagon vs OB? What's the difference?

We have an 04 Mazda 6 wagon.  great car!!  mileage could be better, but ours has the v6...price used about 7K

ATD drives a Focus wagon, he loves it, better mileage than my car, slower too...but for about 3k, its hard to complain.

Just an FYI, paid about $22,000 for my 2011 Forester last year.  With 1.9% financing the payments are about $250 a month.  Insurance is pretty cheap for the Subaru as well, something to consider in the overall vehicle recurring costs.  I have  a Yakama Rocket Box on the top and there's still room for a yak up there too.  The roof box stows all the messy, wet, smelly stuff so the inside of the SUV stays nice and pretty.

Something I've noticed with the 2011 compared to my older 2001;
1. The 2011 has more road noise.
2. The 2011 engine doesn't idle as smoothly when cold. 
3. The 2011 has a sport shift mode on the automatic that is pretty nice in the mountains.
4. The 2011 tows a small trailer better.
5. The 2011 driver seat is a whole lot more comfortable.  I can drive 500/600 miles a day easy; Sacramento to San Diego. 

I am looking hard at the TDI. Factory roof racks and I am door to go. ATD chime in on the focus wagon. I gave up trying to be cool when the 2nd kid came along. I'd prefer to save on a car and put it into fishing.

I'm on the same boat as you Eric. My faithful Acura Integra 95 is getting old. Although I still get around 32 mpg on it, I want a wagon that I can use for kayakfishing and have enough room in the back where I can sleep. I was also looking at the Jetta wagon and the Subaru OB. BTW, I'm on my way to finally shoot my AR, M1a, Springfield 1911, and the Berreta 92fs. Later....
