Wagon recommendations?

My commute may be getting longer. So I am considering a commuter car. I am interested in a wagon of some sort. It needs to be safe as I will be taking the kids to daycare in it and of course comfortable to drive. I am toying with the idea of a wagon so I could use it to haul the yak when fishing solo. I was looking at VW passat or jetta wagon. Any other recommendations. I don't need 4wd. Since it will be a second car I'd like to keep the sicker price low....and I am talking used.

I have been really happy with the 2000 honda CRV I got a few years back.

I have a Passat Wagon. I like it. Repairs are a bit on the pricey side compared to domestic and I have had a few. I have the 4cyl turbo although given the chance to do it again I would go for the 6 cyl. I can be a bit of a leadfoot and any fuel savings on the 4 vs 6 cyl is pretty much lost with aggressive driving or a lot of start and stop. The hight is good and makes it easy to load and unload my kayak. Also has plenty of space to hold gear. I would like more ground clearance but prefer the handling I get with the lower ride and easy load and unload.

+1 on the Subaru bro.
AWD is an added safety feature when those Bay Area roads get slippery.
Only downside is it may be lacking in headroom for you taller folks.
I'm about 5'-7" and can sleep in the back.

I can definitely see you in a Volvo wagon.

Yeah, with gas prices going north and further, those Vanagon/Subies are looking good.

I have a 2011 Subaru Forester and it replaced a 2001 Subaru Forster.  It's a great little wagon.  One of the best things about the Subaru is how easy they are to work on.  For example, the 2001 needed a new radiator at about 150,000 miles.  Two bolts right on the top, loosen the hoses and unplug the electric radiator fan and it's out!!  A 15 to 20 minute job. 
Another time I changed out the timing belt and water pump.  After watching a youtube video showing the guy changing it out one handed-never set the camera down, I ordered the parts off Amazon and got it done. 
I'm telling you this in case you buy a used one and might worry about doing your own future work on it. 

+1 on the Subaru. I have a 2011 Outback and its great in rain and snow.  A little pricy but a quality car.

Momma was in the market for a mid size SUV after she drove her 2000 expedition for 12 years and 250,000 miles.  She drove everything.  Settled on the mercedes ML 350.  All trim levels available making them probably in reach for you.  Un believable car.   I love it!   Her decked out one cost the same as my Yukon and is 100x nicer.  If you budget hits 40k check out the ML350.  I think GB2 has one so it must be good.  If you wanna dive hers head south or maybe the dealer will let you drive one

Subaru is good cars. IMHO you cannot go wrong with either car in line up.
of course all depends on your budget. my friend got latest impreza and have about 27mile per gallon in the city driving. I drive 2010 OB and if I have 22.5 combine milage from day 0ne (car has 40K) with mostly city or like city driving (add hills please)
