Hi All,

Newby here — well, I've been fly fishing for 35 years, but just bought a Jackson Cuda, and this is my first post on NCKA...

I've been out to the Marin Islands a couple of times the last two weeks, really awesome to be out there, but the only stripe I saw was the skunk.

Anyone else been out in the SR area recently? Very open to any and all advice as this is a new twist for me.

Thanks.

Welcome to the madness, jweb. Surf this site for a while and you will find a vast amount of information on locations, etc. Join us at the RTM Classic this weekend at Ocean Cove to meet 60 or 70 brother/sister kayak anglers. Check the Tournaments, etc. page.

There are only a few Marin NCKA members. SteveS is the most active. For fly anglers Marin Schoolie is the only one I knew of in Marin but he hasn't posted in awhile but a PM to both of them is worth a try. The other original hard core fly anglers were:
Paddles and Flies
Surfing Marmot
Flyyaker
Others

None have been that active the last few years. There are fly hackers like me who chuck flies but don't have serious fly skills. I will be swinging  streamers at Ocean Cove this weekend if you want to see a real hack trying not to hook himself.  :smt005

As soon as I get my kayak I will be throwing flies all the time. I'm pretty hard core in the fly world. I can't even remember the last time I used conventional gear. But I am by no means a fly snob. I use to fish bass tournaments and am glad to fish with anyone no matter what they use. It is all about being out there!!

They have been there, but with the water all strangely stained a bit of flash and chartreuse is warranted. The bar between the islands was good on incoming, and the bar on W island on outgo.

I'm sure this rain has screwed it up...scallen , rsymann, and marinschoolie were out there last weekend or so they got blanked on the good tide...
I did decent two weekends ago, but this last one I sat out the gale....

Wow! I wasn't sure how active this forum was — but man, what a great resource.

Throwing flies seems really similar to lures (I think). I'm no snob, just happen to have been born with a fly rod in my hand.

Toygoata, that info you provided is really killer. And it's super interesting reading it in light of the three excursions I've made so far. I'd never been out to the islands before, but it seems like I managed to put myself in pretty much the right areas. I had one solid strike on the outgoing at the NW rip.

I'm gonna be out there this weekend at some point — just waiting to see which day I can get a hall pass.

One question about this forum, does one just reply at the bottom of a string/page, or can you reply to specific posts?

Thanks all! Really psyched to meet some of you out on the water!

You can quote a specific post like I did above if you want to reply to it directly. Or you can just say - "Hey Rock Hopper, I've been there before...", or just post your reply at the bottom of the thread as normal and let everyone else figure it out!

Welcome aboard.

Dont thank me. Thank SteveS for writing such a badass article. I just pointed you in the right direction. Hopefully we can get together sometime soon.  :smt001 :smt006

Welcome to the madness, I dabble a little bit with fly fishing, I prefer going after bass and panfish as their is alot of excitement and little skill needed for them.

Just noticed something cool -- I was studying the SteveS's post from a few years ago regarding the Marin Islands (thank you SteveS!). Decided to look at Google Maps to get a better look (first photo). Then zoomed-in to get a close look (second photo) and to my surprise, there's a kayak parked just off the East island fishing the NW ridge. Damn! That's pretty cool!

Cool!

You can really clearly see those bars in the map...
I need to look at that old post and see if it should get updated...
