My first post with NCKA!! Been fishing the Calif coast for almost 45 years from a boat for Salmon, Halibut, r/c, crab and abalone. now decided to do it the right way from a kayak!  I have a 13' Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game with sonar and can't wait until I hook my first salmon knowing this may have to wait until next year as the season will be coming to a close shortly. Any pointers or suggestions or gear I may need would be greatly appreciated.   Thank you and looking forward to reading the post here.    Robert Jozaitis     (SanityCheck)

I see you just signed up so I don't know how long you've been browsing around the site.  There's just a shitload of info on here about safety, gear, etc. etc.  Sounds like you know the ocean and all it's wonder, excitement and hazards.

you came to the right place.

Pointers/Suggestions: Sign up for the events and tournaments.  You will meet a great group of people, spy out what they are using, their tactics, sit around eating great food and learning a whole lot!!

Scan the Hookup forums and don't be afraid to ask to come along on them.  Most here are quite willing to tell you they think you'll be a good fit or not depending on the activity involved.  For example; a newbie like me, never been on the ocean, might be discouraged from joining some guys heading out for an afternoon with heavier weather but welcomed with open arms on a large scale event where a clinic may be in the works.

Welcome, Robert.  I like the enthusiasm you brought with you.  Keep reading up on how to become a safe and sane kayaker, and the madness of kayakfishing will follow.  Maybe see you up at Shelter Cove next May.   :smt001

Welcome to the site!   One of the first things to avoid here is to shirk off safety while on the water.  People here won't shirk off telling you otherwise!  Lots of great information here.
