Okay all you avid "Paddlers", whats the best way to deploy your trolling setup?

had a bitch of a time last weekend trying to paddling and send down the trout rig (dodger/hoochie rig); especailly into the wind.... or in shallow water (15'-20')...

Never came across this problem 'till I had to pick up a paddle again (on my Mini X).

Thanks guys!!!!

I paddle forward to get momentum, then open the bail and let my setup down about 10 ft into the water.  Close the bail, paddle again to regain momentum.  This is to make sure my setup is streaming backward instead of tangling.  Then open the bail again for a few paddles.  Close again, repeat until sufficient length is deployed.  If I get impatient and let out too much at a time the flashers/dodger tends to angle up and snag the line, getting twisted up.  I'd love to learn a better way though.

On a spinner, just hit the anti-reverse switch. On a caster, just put it in freespol then tighten the spool tension.
Otherwise you have to go paddle paddle let out 10ft, paddle paddle let out 10ft, paddle paddle let out 10ft, paddle paddle let out 10ft, snagged damnit.

Yep! Tighten the tension and just paddle. Let it go out at a slow rate and it will all be good. I also haul ass when I do this. No need to go slow when dropping the line. Never had a tangle.

I like it tensioner huh.I back off on my drag and let it back slow.that's the only way I can get my shuttle hawk to dive good when I'm on the downrigger. If I ever get to fish for something that I should have a preset drag I will use your methods thanks  :smt006

It's all about pulls.  :smt001

Get going with your gear running properly right by your boat, pull line out in 2' increments, get to know how far down that translates to.

i always deploy going downwind then turn around if I want to go upwind.
if you are trolling one line you can deploy going upwind but 2 lines is harder.
