Been getting feedback on the Hobie PA as to whether or not it's considered a kayak by some folks here on NCKA.  So, my question is; Is the Hobie PA recognized as a kayak when it comes to this site and to the events/tournaments for kayaks?

I have a Hobie PA and it's my only fishing platform right now.  I don't want to have any hard feelings from others here on the site if this type of platform isn't considered a kayak or eligible for the participation in the activities posted on here.

I wouldn't have any hard feelings over it if I was told it isn't, but I also don't want to impose or come to the wrong conclusion that the PA is welcome when it is not technically considered a kayak.

So, what makes a kayak a kayak?  If there are those (most, even all) who don't consider the PA a kayak, then what would be the reason?  In comparing the PA to the other Hobie products, it seems it's only size, but then there are other Hobie's that are even longer than a PA.  So what exactly would disqualify a PA from the kayak classification?

I never heard anyone say that about the the PA. If that was the case then I would say every Hobie does not count.
A kayak is defined by the International Canoe Federation (the world sanctioning body) as a boat where the paddler faces forward, legs in front, using a double-bladed paddle.
Oh, I guess all the AOTY entries from peddle Hobie's don't count. It says nothing about leg propulsion. :-)

I believe a canoe uses a single bladed paddle by definition.

Non-yak. You should sell it cheap.
I'll take it off your hands.

I have heard some discussion on whether its a kayak or not, and I'd say yes, it is.  You can paddle a PA, if you want, or if you have to.  I think what Rob posted should put this discussion to bed.  On top of what he posted, it has one seat.  Really the only way I think one can dispute it being a kayak is the mirage drive.  Can't be the seat, then the Jackson Coosa wouldn't be a kayak, cant be the width, cause then the OK Big Game might not be a kayak.   Its an amazing fishing machine, and I hope to get one asap.  Its all human power to me, so I dont care.  I should have never test rode that one in SD, I was sold after 30sec.

Jerry,

Yours is a damn aircraft carrier!!!! :smt044 I still want to know where the squadron of planes is.

Yes I consider it a luxury kayak. You have room for a bar, you can probably sleep comfortably on it and is spacious.

The mirage drive, outriggers and sail provide a distinct fishing advantage. Whether organizers of events or competitions choose to allow them to compete in "kayak" events is a matter of personal choice. I just want to catch big fish and really don't care about competition so I chose the vessel which gives me the best fishing advantage, the most fun and safest in bad conditions.

I know it would be a ride I would want to add to my single fleet.  San Diego people prefer your ride and would snap it in a bit for those YTs :smt003
Just have fun with it if you don't mind the extra weight.

Ditto.

I think the whole non yak thing started because hobie classifies it as a boat not a yak. but who cares human powered peddle or paddle. Catch fish thats more important
Where did he go george

yeah that is true but i think this tread is because, the ai is also classified as a boat also but the ai is accepted but not the pa.nobody seems to care that the ai is not a yak by hobie but the pa seems to be singled out
