Any one going to be around next weekend for a Trinidad run? Thinking about leaving redding early Saturday morning. Any one have any weather up dates? Or gps points?

Hi Jeff,

My Dad and I are headed over Thursday evening, and my plan is to fish Trinidad Friday and Saturday and head back Sunday for work (graveyards).  I think we are going to take the 14' bay runner for the beach launch this trip, but will see you there.

We are talking about headed out for Pac Halibut around 5-6 miles off shore, then some rock fish and maybe some salmon trolling if we are hearing good reports.  We will be on channel 68.  I doubt we will get an early start, I am working graveyards now so it takes me a while to get moving, LOL.

Here is the NOAA forecast.  Click on the map for local forecasts.

Here is the NOAA bouy site.

So far the forecast is looking very good.  5 foot swell and 1 foot wind waves are predicted for Friday.  Hopefully the frequency is not that bad.  If the weather turns we will be in the north bay for california halibut and sharks, launching at the Samoa launch.

It's channel 78 in Trinidad.  Trinidad salmon bite has been real slow, but maybe the flat water will change things.  I will let yall know how the mid week bite is since I will be going for halibut Wednesday and thursday.  I have many numbers I could share if my damn ff/gps worked.

Thanks Rob, I will use 78 in Trinidad.  I look forward to hearing how you do out there.  You are bound to get a 100 lb fish before long!  I am looking forward to some sand dabs, I love those things.  Great eating.

If the salmon bite is still going I may head out of Eureka one day (launch ramp willing with the salmon season ending).  I saw your and Domenic's report on Humboldt Tuna.  Very nice.  I may have to try some mooching.

I'll be on 78 then. What's the bottom look like out there. Is it all rock with assorted peaks and valleys? Or sand with rock piles I'm going to have to find? Got my drysuit, gps, lots of time on the salt, not worried about going solo but would love some company with the local intel.

Here you go Jeff,

http://earthnc.com/online-nautical-charts

I use this to find structure on the nautical charts.  Zoom in and right mouse click on rock piles and structure on the map and it will give you the GPS location.  I then program these into my GPS/chart plotter.  I found it worked great at Shelter Cove.  I was able to navigate right to rock piles.  I have most the rocks and reefs marked at Trinidad.  I did pretty well on the blacks out by flat iron rock last trip to Trinidad.

They have a mobile app too, but I would be afraid of using my phone on the water.  I don't have a waterproof case for it.

NOAA has all their charts online now, and Englunds in Eureka has some nice waterproof charts.

There are some good reefs just northwest of the cove.  You will see the kelp.  It is mainly sand with rock piles.  I am sure Rob and Eric can give better specifics.  I have had good luck moving until I mark fish on the rocks and then dropping on them around Trinidad.  Other wise is seems I do a lot of drifting for just a few bites.

Sounds like they are getting some Salmon out of Eureka still, right around the dump pile and whistle.  Not hearing many salmon reports from Trinidad.

Matt

I'll stick in close with you, just out to the rocks on the other side of the head. I'm running out of time on locating the FF I want so this might be a blind trip again

If it gets nasty I'll duck inside of the bay. I just hooked up my new FF/ gps unit and I'm itching to see how it does. When you say HBO are you talking inside the bay or out the jaws? Doesn't ocean salmon season close this weekend?

Apologies.  HBO = Humboldt Bay Offshore
Only will go HBO if I am with someone who has fished HBO before
Yes, salmon season closes Sept 9th

Darn, tempting! Jeff, are you heading out early Saturday from Redding and coming back all in a day? I mentioned the idea to my wife, she did not shake head no, but looked at me with that "really" look of didn't you just go last weekend? I was thinking of Lake Britton on Saturday... however... :smt006

Dave I could be talked into a one day run. Not sue where to sleep over there, I'm looking for campgrounds but most look like trailer parks or have horrible reviews.
