Hey guys. I'm new at kayak fishing. I'm looking to get a new rod and reel setup. I want to fish for sturgeon, halibuts, rock fish and anything else i can catch. For the rod what size/action should i use? Any recommendations on reel? Any info will help thanks.

Depends. How much money are you looking to spend? Do you have a preference for fiberglass or graphite rods? Level wind or non-level wind reels?

For a generic less expensive option I would go with a medium light ugly stick, any saltwater version, 7' or longer. Pair that with a Diawa sealine that matches the pound test line you are wanting to use. Abu Garcia 6000's and 7000's are great reels too for the money.

A more expensive option would be a Calstar light or medium light Grafighter rod paired with an Avet SX. Diawa saltists are great reels too.

The price difference between the two setups is staggering but I love my Grafighters and Avets and wouldn't trade em' for anything. Well maybe a Corvette. :smt003

Go to this yard sale and buy the jigmaster/uglystick for $35!

MH gave great advise....Both set ups catch all the local fish you mention (well). AND both set ups sink at the same rate when you drop them overboard  :smt003

+1....if it's alredy sold, go to fisherman's Wharehouse and buy the same stuff new.

7' Ugly stick medium weight, and Penn 500 Jigmaster.  Bulletproof and will catch just about anything we have around here.

one word of warning though... the Ugly Stik tiger/ jigmaster combo is a great place to start. I still have mine & fish it once in a while or use it as a loaner.

BUT...once the "madness" sets in, you'll be looking for a specialized setup for each species :smt044.

ShimanoTrevala Rod with a Diawa Sealine reel......it's light weight and sports a very good backbone....the reel is bomb proof and wont rust/corrode on you.

I have seen you guys slay with this setup. Other than something custom made, this rig is one I want to try out the next time I'm "in the market". I like how it is super light, but extremely capable.

+1. I beat the heck out of mine when I started up and it is still fishable today. Heavy, but very sturdy rods for the $.

i ended up pairing my luna 300 with the okuma cedros coastal inshore 801xh. super light and really balanced feel with the reel installed on the rod. have yet to try it out but seems to have pretty good backbone.

calcutta 400 te with a fenwick striper rod(discontinued) fairly light but handles heavy weight

daiwa saltist 40 with a calstar deckhand rod(8' mh) this is a heavy setup tho.
