Anyone try and make one? Considering the last few events this seems like it may be a useful item to have. I am gonna try and make one up this weekend. I will post the results.

That is cool Eric.
I have a small one I got years ago at REI. The last time I used it was to guy out a tarp though :smt001.

seems like it ought to be simple enough to sew up. Sew a tube, sew up one end & put a grommet in it, then sew a drawstring around the open end. Knot an appropriate rope through the grommet, then coil up the rest into the bag.

have fun!

DEFINITELY test it out first.
You don't want something that may or may not work if someone's life depends on it.
I still have mine from like 20+ years ago.
Two days ago I gave it a good fresh water soak, gave it a good toss to get all the line out to let it dry and inspected every inch of it.
It's a great multi tool to have besides possibly being someone's life line.
Can't wait to see the final product.

Scotty makes one you can get for about $20

I agree that its a simple piece of gear that most of us should have handy. You can also use it to tow if needed. Look forward to see what you come up with.

Great idea, Eric.  Looking forward to seeing it.  I saw one in my Dad's garage recently - I'll retrieve it and report back with details.  He had a six-pack charter service at one point way back in the late 80's / early 90's, so I think it's a pretty heavy duty one.

Just snapped a few pics. I added a swim bait for reference. I had all the materials at home which included an old stuff bag from a waterproof REI jacket and the carabiner. I added a grommet. I also added some drip line hose inside the loop to hold it open so a swimmer could simply slide their hand in. the bag is a little small so reloading it takes a bit of time I'd like to find a larger mesh bag for version two. Total cost was 5 for the rope. Tested it and was able to toss it 40 feet no problem with deployment

I can't tell what kind of rope you used on that.
Most throw bags use a Polypropylene Filament High-Density Braid, Nylon. This kind of safety rope is much softer and easier to handle than conventional coarsely- braided ropes.
A lot of throw bags also have some foam inside so the bag stays afloat.
Here's a thought. How about, with more advanced notice for sure, we have a throw bag competiton? Distance and accuracy. Maybe a MBF for a couple of bucks each?
Might get more people interested in having one and practice using it for when it counts...just a thought.

It the standard hollow poly rope. I doubt it would be up to white water rescue. But should do fine for a tow rope. Yeah that's sounds like fun...could do distance, accuracy and time (deploy and repack).

That homemade bag is nice. Good job!

All this good info made me want one.  Stopped at FW today and pick up the Scotty bag. $19.99.

Naoaki taught me the importance of Throw Bags I fished the river for Steel with him twice and made a B-Line to West Marine. :smt011
