So after a paddling in countless days of high winds I am over my paddle. It's a bending branches fiberglass shaft/ nylon blade version with the old style push button ferrule and it will not come apart. Normally I don't feather but I do in windy situations and have been hating the straight shaft lately. Anyone know any tricks to unstick it or should I but the aquabound stingray I have been eyeing?

Whish I could help you,
Unfortunatly I have the same problem with a old BB paddle.
Luckly it's only a back up or loaner paddle.
I will be watching to see if anyone has a good solution.

See Ya Soon,

It takes 2 people one on each side. One pushes down on the button, the other pounds on the ferrule with a fist while both pulling on the shaft. Holakai at MBK taught me the trick. After you separate the blades, blast water into the ferrule to clean out any sand or grit which is usually the reason for it sticking. If you clean it after each use it will usually not get stuck.

If it is stuck because the button wont depress, blast corrosion x into it until it depresses.

Thanks GB2 I will try the pounding method for sure. The button is functioning so that won't be an issue.

It may sounds silly , hold the paddle behind your knees and try pulling apart with them back there. The angle that your pulling at helps to unstick them.

I apply a little silicon grease to the ferrule from time to time and always give it a good spray with the hose to keep the dirt from clogging it.  Silicon spray lubricant might actually work better since sand won't stick to it like grease.

+1
It happened to me. I sprayed WD-40 around the seam where the paddles conect. Stand the paddle on end so it can seep in. Wait 15 minutes and repeat. Do it about 4 times (1 hour) then have a friend help you pull it apart.
Once it's apart clean both ends real well.
Blast water on the inside on that metal thingy that the button is on. You'll be surprised how much fine grit gets in there.
Stick a rag down there and twist it around to clean it.
Finish it off with some silicon and you should be as good as new.

I've tried hitting it with corrosion-x ..... no luck :smt012
It is an aluminum shaft so next I am going to try a little heat.
This is a back up paddle so no major if it gets messed up.
The reason for the locking is I put it away without cleaning after a salt trip last year .... oops!!!!

Just be careful with your finger when you push the button down with it and pulling on the shaft.  Speaking from experience  :smt003

Thanks for the tips and I will try the two man method tomorrow. If that is a no-go I will try the warm water soak. I oiled it up with some reel oil and am letting it soak in so we'll see but regardless I will post the results.

Vwool- dude that is a great tip as I was able to put a lot more pressure on the paddle with that method. I think this baby will be a two man assignment though or maybe I'm just a sissy.

On a side not I locked it up after a river misson while using the paddle for a push pole at times. Appearantly that is a no-go although it has always been real tight. :smt003

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

Ok so the padlle is a two piece again. :smt003 Pat, Dan, and I all pulled on it while I whacked the ferrule with my fist and it reluctantly came apart. Way stoked about that and thanks everyone for the advice. NCKA ROCKS!  :smt004

Glad that worked for you. The first time Holakai showed me the trick, we were inside the store and when it popped loose, the recoil sent me into a clothing rack which I almost knocked over.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005

I break my paddle down at the end of each trip while my buddies are still around. That way if it is stuck, there is someone to help me unstick it.
