What a trip...

Had a blast fishing and hanging with Dad  and the crew at the East Cape over the last week.  Fishing was generally slow for all.  Long rides for small tuna and a non-existent bottom fish bite allowed us to focus on Roosterfish and stick close to the ranch each day.

The Rancho Leonero crew is top notch, the staff felt more like friends than just the help.  Just the way we like it.  Thanks to Malolo (SBD) we were introduced to the manager Gary upon arriving, and he had a special treat for us.  The Hobie crew had been down for a photo shoot a little while back and left a couple Pro Angler 12s.  Gary has been hiding them in storage, reluctant to rent them out to anybody.  With a solid recommendation from Mr. White we were thrilled to have the chance to fish these awesome fishing machines.

Lots of great memories were made, and we have a few new campfire stories to tell.

On to the pics!

Dad and I both connected with our first Roosters from the kayak.

These fish are MAGIC!

HOOKUPS!

Caballito, the bait of choice for big gallos.

Glassy mornings...

led to breezy afternoons.

Which were spent wisely...

We toured the grounds and stayed in three different rooms...

Veinte was my favorite.

Lots of things live in the roof.  Heard a very funny story about a couple who did not like seeing bugs run across the floor of their room.  So they brought down bug bombs on their next trip, set one off and returned to millions of dead bugs completely covering the entire room.

Night fishing with friends was one of the highlights for me.  Huge lightning storms passed over the Sea of Cortez a couple of nights.

Puffer

That's a moray! or EEEEELLLLLL!!!!!

The cats of the Ranch.  Dad noticed how they each had their own territory staked out.

The Queen, Marcelena and her backwards paw. Lives in and around the office.

Lucky runs the bar area and dining patio.  Not a big fan of lettuce, tuna is preferred.

Blackie. He owns the main fountain and the hermit crabs living in it.

Did not get the name of these two young'ns, but they hang around the "Man Wing."

Taco the Mexican Hairless.  Not your typical Baja dog that we love so much, this guy is pampered. Washed and oiled daily.  He was a real character.

This place has it all, even mushroom hunting.

DoDo indicator.

The neighbors were friendly...

The last sunset was bittersweet..

Nice. I'm going next year. I have pics of all of those cats from when I was there, too!

Glad you guys hooked some roosters. That's all I wanted when I went down and just about the only thing I didn't catch.

Did you guys do any mothershipping with the pangas?

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

I thought you would recognize those gatos Dustin!

No mothershipping for us, fished right out front the whole time.  Jim and Sean's guided groups were not doing much better with the long trips while we were there so we kept it simple.  Sounds like the travelling payed off for them eventually.  One of their clients broke the kayak world record for cubera snapper. A beast of a fish!

Great trip and photos....man I'm jealous I need to get back down there.  Was down there awhile ago and also fished off the kayaks but didn't have the opportunity at roosters.  I do remember bringing in the sierras and having the kitchen make some killer fresh ceviche with their margaritas....

Patrick.... those are some beautiful roosters and awesome pics.  I'm so glad you and your dad had a great trip.  Sometimes things just work out the way they're suppose to.  Kudos to Gary and Sean for hooking up the Hobies.

Yup!  The two piece rods fit nicely in the overhead bins, and the reels go in our back packs.
