Anyone do this? I'm wondering if it's actually effective. And also, how many pool noodles it would take to actually keep your yak afloat if it were to become fully submerged.

Yep, tons of info on the site about this.  I keep about 2 dozen in my yak.

Try using that site search feature on the upper right, it's pretty nifty.

Each standard noodle (~2.5"/60") wil give about 8-10# of bouyancy. I have 18 in my T13 and think I need more.

And yes it's been discussed allot,

I didn't think it would take that many. I still need to do this. You'd think most yaks would come with a foam block in the hull or something.

My Hobie Revolution (2011) came with foam blocks from the factory but I added 2 dozen for extra insurance :smt002

Can never have too many but remember that the boat itself has some boyancy (as does most gear onboard -- even if the boyancy isn't 100% of it's weight).  I only have 5 in my Stealth 14 & need to add some more before the 21st.

I have a couple of dozen in mine and still want some more. With out the noodles it will float full of water with me sitting in it but it is tipsy. Add waves and you might as well swim.  With the noodles it can't hold as much water. They come in handy as crab floats and to float other things like poles. They don't add much weight either.

I have a bunch in my Prowler, and behind the tank well where they won't go past, I squirted a whole can of super expanding great stuff and gooped the hole. I've had great stuff in a yak for years and it stayed firm and closed celled, tho it's not " Coast Guard approved... A leaking yak will sink period.

IMO, it's a must to have pool noodles inside the yak!! Currently I have 4 large diameter noodles and 2 smaller diameter noodles inside my T13, which kept my T13 from sinking when my buddy flipped my yak with the mod pod hatch open.

My intital reason for having noodles inside my yak was in case a GWS ever hit my yak, that I would be able to make it back on land safely. After noticing that my noodles was barely enough to keep it afloat, I decided to put more inside.

Either way, it's worth having extra safety assurances along with other safety tools :)

Pool noodles are a good solution, but there are other options as well;
1. kayak/canoe flotation bags, http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=4035&pdeptid=1760 Be sure to partially deflate when transporting or storing. Heat and big altitude changes can effect air pressure in the bags.

2. expanding foam specifically formulated for marine bouyancy applications, http://www.tapplastics.com/product/repair_products/foam_insulation_materials/tap_x_30_polyurethane_foam/79  Be careful not to fill areas where you need access to hardware or mechanicals (rudder controls etc.) with expanding foam.

I use air bags in the bow and stern along with pool noodles packed along the inside of the gunnels/sides, this still leaves plenty of usable space inside the rod  pod and front access port.
