After the Capitola attack the people on the power boat ( a female) yelled about a ? fin. We quickly clarified it as a Dolphin. It was fairly close. I don't remember seeing dolphins nearby prior to the attack but I had been busy setting up my fishing gear. After the PB started to tow the damaged yak, we continued back toward the wharf. On my left I saw Dolphin activity inside the kelp beds which is unusual. I saw a total of three dolphins. They had just entered this clear roughly circular area. They seemed to be gathering around something or meeting up.  I didn't seem any surface indication of bait fish, nor were they employing the fluke slapping technique they use for corraling bait. They gathered around eachother for a few moments and then headed out of the kelp towards us. More towards the slow moving power boat and the other remaining kayaker  than myself. I was taking up the rear.  The power boat paused to appreciate the approaching dolphins. The dolphins (specifically two) turned directly towards me.  They went under and resurfaced twice The second time they were within 30 - 40 feet There was one approximately on each side of me. I gently paddled hoping they would next come up beside me. They did not. They did a 180 underwater and came up slight farther away They slowly moved away. One on the right closer to the kelp and the another to my left. I don't know where the third Dolphin went . May be it was watching my back.  The two in front continued moving away slowly in line with our path back to the wharf while maintaining their spacing. I mention this as it seemed unusual and I remember stories about dolphins in connection with shark encounters off Marina CA.
In the first attack the surfer was supposedly surround by Dolphins after the attack, saving his life. The second more recent attack had reports of dolphins  plalying in the surf near the attacked surfer. Two to three weeks ago there was a reputable report of a GWS swimming under a paddleboarder in the same area and Dolphins were present.
It makes me wonder if the sharks were looking for a Dolphin dinner at the time of the attacks or if the Dolphins knew the sharks were in the area and were looking after humans. After the  noise caused by our attack and the quick appearence of a Dolphin, it's hard to believe they didn't know it was there  -- and  were perhaps pinging it with their sonar.
I'd like to hear from our more salty members ( you too Salty  :smt001) on their personal experiences with Dolphins.
Do you think the sharks are there for Dolphin dinners and settle for a yak, or, are the Dolphins there are looking after us , or Neither
I know the historical and hollywood stories, but I'd prefer to hear yours

In the game of biggest fish, if you can't enjoy routinely gettin' your ass handed to you, by great fishermen, then you don't belong in the NCKA.

Cool topic man. I took dolphins for granted for years...they're everywhere around Monterey and Carmel. But I pay a lot more attention to them after I heard the story from Todd about the dolphins during his attack in 2007 surfing Marina.
The tone of this video is kinda religiousy and dolphiny but it's mostly true.

On my left I saw Dolphin activity inside the kelp beds which is unusual.

On the contrary; every time I've been out in the Pleasure Point area, I've seen dolphins making their rounds through the center of the kelp bed.

I remember a few years back when Seacliff Beach was closed down because a porpoise had been seen getting hit and washed up with bite marks. Not a dolphin, but similar.

I've read from multiple sources that dolphins and sharks are enemies, and that a whole pod of dolphins can do some serious damage to a shark. Orcas are actually a species of dolphin, so I'd imagine that they would have some behavioral and physical similarities that could be the reason for this.

from ancient times till now mariners of the mediterranean believe that dolphins are the souls of lost mariners come back to protect those who go to sea, and i believe this, i was out solo in less than ideal conditions that got worse, was paddling by gps due to large swell, fog and a squall that rolled through ,and these two dolphins showed up and escorted me for a good twenty minute paddle back to the protected cove i launched from, soon as i hit the mouth they veered of and where gone, cameron
