It deters sharks the other way but does it deter fish?

Nope, even the noise sensitive large ones don't mind.

Peace of mind is worth 500. I'm down with the group discount (if there is one).

Andy -

Before buying one read this and do a Google search on SS. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-06-18/shark-shields-tested-attack/4076368

I have owned 2 but like magnum pepper spray for grizzles, it probably only works 75% of time at best. Don't let fear guide a $600 decision. My 2 cents is that it won't stop the initial missle attack but it may prevent it from coming back AKA Fishunter incident.

nowhere near getting one..just saying if i had money to blow i may spend it on a SS. after doing research as well. i do think of sharks when I'm out there and have had those feelings as well , those eerie quiet times on the water where nothing seems right , where it feels like your being watched. fished muir today and just to the north of those wash rocks my uncle spotted one back in 2002. its just part of the nor cal kayak fishing game and if your not comfortable with it , maybe the salt isn't for you.

I will add that, given it's effective range (~8m), I don't believe it will do a thing against a larger shark coming at you at speed. A GWS in full-on hunting mode will cover 8m in a fraction of a second and be hurling you out of your seat well before it has time to react to the shield and turn away. But what it probably will do is stop the inquistive ones from coming up and having a nibble at your boat.

Until I see actual footage(s) of a GWS - on a full breach attack mode - turn away from a shark shield user, then I'd invest in one. IMO: I'd rather count on the buddy system for now  :smt045

I wonderif the fishy smell of a well loved and much bloodied boat is a factor? Do they trail the yak first? Then hit it? So much we don't know... glad even though boats have been damaged, we haven't lost a brother/sister to the landlord...  :smt001
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I think the Shark Shield gives its user a false sense of security. From the article:

Quote
"Researcher Charlie Huveneers wrote up the results.

"In South Australia with the static bait, we did not find any differences in the proportion of bait being consumed by white sharks whether the shield was turned on or off," he said.

"There are situations where the white sharks were still capable of getting very close to the shark shield, within half a metre, and was still capable of consuming a bait."

So if the GWS wants to bite you, it will. Not quite the GWS deterrent that Shark Shield wants you to believe.

I must be missing something here.  How is it that being with other yakers makes a diff on whether or not the GWS comes around?  I understand the rescue aspect, is there more?  There's a youtube vid out there of a couple guys on yaks rafted up as a GWS circles around.

The theory is that sharks prefer single targets and not multiple targets in a school or pod like whales and dolphins. Personally I don't like fishing that close to other people because of line tangles. Chuck thinks the Hobie AI has a big enough profile that a shark won't attack it and there are no reports of an AI being attacked that I know of. With the amas it is also the most survivable if the hull is breached.

I'm confused, are you saying you are no longer offended by promoting a product based on an incident,  or it was the severity of the incident that offended?

HAha......Nail it Steve-O!

"I was so offended years back when a previous manager (since relieved) wanted to know why I wasn't making sales based on a recent shark fatality here in California"

Yet you post a blatant sales pitch the day after our most recent GW incident?

C'mon spike

How about a bang stick? Works for GWS and, dogs chasing you on a bike!

plus, I don't like things on my kayak that can blow my foot off by accident.
