Greetings!

My name is Cheryl Barnes and I am a graduate student at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. As part of my master's thesis, I will be conducting a study, which evaluates the reproductive capabilities of California Halibut (Paralichthys californicus). More specifically, I will estimate and compare growth rates, length and age at maturity and egg production of halibut from three central California locations (Half Moon Bay, Monterey Bay and Morro Bay) to better understand this economically important species and provide information for resource management.

If you are interested in donating a carefully-filleted California Halibut carcass (all internal organs intact; you keep the fillets) and/or providing additional information to help advance this study, please contact:

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and I look forward to hearing from some of you soon.

I know Cheryl, and she is good people.

 :smt004

IMO this is a cool study cuz from what I understand there is not a lot known about the CA Halibut up here in NorCal, and a lot more research has been done on SoCal populations.

So, it seems to me that research on how big they are when they reach maturity etc sounds like a good thing.

Look at how many butts have come out of SC already this year!!! And this is a place that has "NO FISH" according to a lot of us.  LOL! What a great opportunity to learn more about the resource and population and make sure that current management practices (size and bag limit etc) make sense.

I want my kiddos to be able to catch big butts like DC.

 :smt002 :smt003

Cheryl, if I manage to shoot or catch one this year I will call you for sure...and I hope other folks in the SC/Cap/Monterey area do the same.

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

I appreciate your support, Jim!

And thank you, Derrik.  I'll actually be in Morro Bay on the 23th (great for easy pick-up), but definitely give me a call anytime!  I'll be wishing you all the luck (and don't forget to be careful when cutting into it...I need all organs intact).  ;)

Thanks again!!!

Watch out! Wouldn't take much for Paul Watson to sink your yak.

That group doesn't have enough sea knowlege collectively to sink a kayak .... let alone chase a whaling fleet!  The amount of byproducts they have produced trying to stop the whaling has most likely lead to more whales killed than saved.  Another "reality" tv joke IMHO

He has as much there's more captain in "Captain Morgan" or "Captain Crunch" than Capt. Paul Watson.

When I catch my next one I will make an effort to fillet it with the innerds in and contact you if I do. :smt003 Question though.  I see it's in the no-go zone but can I take the cheek cuts/meat or is it just fillets?

Thank you for choosing Ca Halibut for the study and please post any findings even if it's going to take awhile.  :smt001

Thanks Meat Hunter!  I will definitely communicate my results (although it won't be until at least the end of 2014 - after collection, processing, analyses and writing). :D

And...you can definitely take the cheek meat. There's a good morsel in there, which can hopefully make up for the bit of meat you may be leaving behind to keep everything else intact.

Thanks again!!!
Cheryl

Have only one carcass in chest freezer, but can work to save more from myself and others.

Do you have a timeframe that you need them by?
Just want to accumulate enough to make it worth the time to drop off.  :)

I just wanted to see what all the hubbub was about so I watched a few episodes on demand  ...My personal conclusion is , I am against the whaling BUT I think UN-capt Paul is the fool in charge of "A Ship of Fools"  he is going to get someone killed and I think he looks forward to that day...I did not see  one " old salty dog"  on any of his vessels nothing but  TV want-to-be sailors...
